Established in 1981 as Toleman Motorsport, prior to metamorphosing into Benetton in 1986 and then Renault F1 Team in 2002, “Team Enstone” secured consecutive World Drivers’ Championships with Michael Schumacher in 1994 and 1995 prior to Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006. Genii Capital acquired a majority stake in the team in 2009—albeit with Renault remaining as engine supplier—while for 2012 the team was rebranded as Lotus F1 Team, in deference to incoming main sponsor Lotus Cars. Concurrent recruitment of 2007 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean proved inspired; the Finn’s victory in Abu Dhabi represented the team’s first in four years.
Both drivers were retained for 2013, with Räikkönen promptly winning the opening round in Australia in the team’s new E21 design. The pair accrued a further 13 podium finishes that season, of which six are attributable to the chassis offered here: E21-04. In Räikkönen’s hands it finished 2nd in Germany—a mere second behind victor Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull—and in Hungary. Thereafter, Grosjean piloted E21-04 in the final seven races, scoring 3rd-placed finishes in South Korea, Japan, and India and 2nd in the United States; a sequence which secured Lotus 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship for the second successive year.
Offered directly from BWT Alpine F1 Team—the DNA of which is directly traceable back to Toleman—E21-04 is presented in static, non-running condition, and represents a spectacular and historic example of this final generation of normally aspirated Formula 1 cars.
