In 1966, Land Rover’s designers began work on a new two-door concept known as the “Velar”.
Their goal was to create a vehicle with the same off-road abilities as the Land Rover, but with improved comfort and on-road performance.
English and avant-garde, the Range Rover has become a legend over the years, with its stunning looks, comfort, impressive load capacity and above all its huge snob appeal.
Introduced to the market in 1970, the original first-generation Range Rover Classic became the British Motoring Industries proudest production, with a long production run till 1996.
Initially was available just in a two-door body style until 1981, before the release of the four-door model.
The first-generation Range Rover was not designed as a luxury 4×4; whilst certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had fairly basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose.
Convenience features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth or leather seats and wooden interior trim were fitted later in the production run or as options.,
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This rare Range Rover Classic, first registered in 1972, is what is known as a “Suffix A” model, i.e. from the first series built before 1973.
This specific vehicle bears the chassis number XXXX1949A, making it the 1,949th Range Rover produced.
In 2019 the well known specialist Tophat, in the Netherlands, was entrusted with giving the Range Rover a new lease of life.
Tophat is known for making exclusive Land Rovers on orders for international customers.
This example is unique in its kind and it has been subjected to a course of extensive renovations and improvements, but it still retains the charm of a true Range Rover.
Externally, the car is finished in Bahama Gold.
Bahama Gold is an excellent colour, somewhere between with warm tones it’s almost a Mustard shade.
Under the bonnet where you would typically find a 3.5-litre carburettor equipped Rover V8 is a Corvette 6162cc V8 engine and benefits from air conditioning.
The power increased to around 500 Hp and was combined with a Magnum 6-speed gearbox. To balance handling with power, this Range Rover has Koni shock absorber with adjustable air suspension.
The correct rims are adapted to the large brakes to ensure safety.
The engine runs extremely well and benefits from a new radiator and cooling fan.
The underside is also in excellent shape, as part of the restoration it was stripped down, painted and re-assembled with new bushes, brakes and components as well as the axles and steering box being overhauled.
Between the options and accessories: ABS, Air conditioning, Alarm system, Front armrests, Central locking with remote control, Air suspension, Power steering and the Towbar.
In total the car received in excess of € ,000 worth of restoration work throughout 2019.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
The Range Rover is in a superb cosmetic condition. The paint can be best described as from a very high standard with a beautiful deep shine and gloss.
The body is extremely straight which is unique because the car is off-course very big.
The refurbished wheels are excellent, and the tailgate, both upper and lower sections, is in great condition.
No money has been saved on anything during the restoration so also the rubber surroundings in the door and around the windows are all in new condition.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior of this Tophat example are all a cut above the regular Range Rover Classics.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a wonderful full genuine Brown leather seats with the original tanned trench.
The carpet set is colour coded to match and the car retains its original three-spoke steering wheel.
It’s an utterly distinctive place to sit.
In addition to its very chic layout it has optional power windows and air conditioning.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
We have had many Range Rover Classics to use for towing our trailers to pick up and deliver cars. We just love these cars and never ever will have a period without a Range Rover.
This example is an iconic Suffix A model worthy of admiration.
It is absolutely amazing how this Range Rover Classic looks on the outside but it is even more special on the inside. What an amazingly beautiful car.
Its extra bits of luxury help it appeal to those looking for a collection piece or something to explore the countryside in with relative comfort. The additional horsepower is a welcome addition as well.
A power upgrade to 500 HP guarantees performance will live up to the promise of its eye-catching looks and exclusive appearance.
It’s also surprisingly easy to manoeuvre around town. Good visibility, combined with a high-up driving position and lots of right angle.
You would adore its character. This luxury off-roader is not lacking in arguments to seduce enthusiasts in search of a Range Rover with an exclusive finish.
