Lancia’s reputation for technical innovation continued with the introduction of its Aurelia model in 1950. Powered by the first production V-6 engine, its chassis featured a rear-mounted clutch-gearbox-differential assembly that optimized weight distribution while inboard rear brakes reduced unsprung weight. The Aurelia became decidedly more sporting during its nine-year production run, evolving from the original sedan version into sporting coupes and finally the open two-seater variant introduced in 1954. Concurrently, chassis improvements continued, including engine displacement and the adoption of a De Dion rear axle. These elements meshed in a compact package that delivered spirited performance, culminating in the B24S model, such as the 6th-Series Cabriolet from 1958 offered here.
Complementing Lancia’s balanced technical components was a cabriolet body style designed by master coachbuilder Pinin Farina. Introduced in 1956, the cabriolet provided a more civilized driving experience courtesy of an improved soft top, complete with roll-up side windows and vent wings. Pinin Farina masterfully blended Lancia’s signature grille with an athletic, graceful design free of excessive ornamentation.
Formerly the property of a Ferrari enthusiast, this example is equipped with the rare Nardi performance kit featuring twin Weber carburetors capped by the distinctive Nardi air cleaner. Finished in silver paintwork, the contrasting black canvas cabriolet top lowers behind the seats, providing an uninterrupted taper to the rear extremities of the car. Another seldom-seen option found on this example is the removable hardtop, painted in matching silver for a cohesive presentation when in place.
Upholstered in as delivered Pelle Rosso (Red Leather), the leather bucket seats are now fitted with safety belts and the original leather seat skins accompany the car. A Philips radio is centrally placed in the dashboard with a lockable glove box to the right. At the rear, a finish ed trunk houses the jack, tool roll, and spare.
During preparation for rally use, its brake, steering, suspension, fuel, ignition, and exhaust systems were rebuilt or serviced, and the car successfully participated in the Mountain Mille in 2016. Well maintained thereafter, it was recognized with a first in class at the 2017 Mar-a-Lago Concours and the Corinthian Award at the 2019 Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance. The accompanying Lancia Classiche certificate confirms that this Aurelia retains its matching-numbers engine, differential, steering box and front suspension.
As the product of two legendary Italian motoring names – Lancia and Pinin Farina – this Aurelia merges technical brilliance with visual appeal, delivering driver satisfaction, top up or down. Equipped with the Nardi tuning enhancements, it makes for an ideal candidate for any number of tours or rallies, while its aesthetic qualities can be appreciated on the concours field. Just 371 of these well-balanced cabriolets were built, and very few are as well equipped as this example.
