The Lamborghini Espada was introduced while the company was still under the ownership and control of its eponymous leader, Ferruccio Lamborghini. In production alongside the Islero and Miura, the Espada was the marque’s offering as a four-seater grand tourer with a signature Lamborghini twist. The sleek coupé’s svelte styling by Marcello Gandini at Bertone gave the Espada a distinctive profile, while its 3.9-litre V-12 engine—derived from the earlier 400 GT 2+2—meant it could keep up with contemporary supercar company. A revised Series II was revealed in 1970, showing a tweaked front grille design, with its engine uprated to 350 horsepower, and with numerous updates around the interior.
The Series II example offered here is recorded to have been delivered new via Lamborcar of Milan on 3 July 1970. The Espada was finished in Argento Metallizzato over a Nero interior, a colour combination the car retains to this day. While its subsequent history is not documented, the Lamborghini joined The Curated Collection in 2012. In the following years, the Espada was subject to around €50,000-worth of cosmetic restoration work completed by various Belgian bodyshops (invoices available to view on file). Representing a fascinating chapter of Lamborghini history, the Espada offers an enticing alternative to 1970s supercar ownership.
