The bleak years after 1945 were, not surprisingly, an era when great sports cars were somewhat thin on the ground; a shining exception was the mighty Jaguar XK series, yet another product of the flawless stylists eye (to say nothing of the astute business brain) of Sir William Lyons. Unarguably one of the most elegant sports cars of all time, the XK120 used the superb twin-cam six cylinder engine to provide 120mph performance and acceleration to suit the most demanding tastes. The series evolved further with the XK140 and ended finally with the most refined of all the models, the XK150. Fewer than 10,000 of these cars were manufactured between 1957 and 1961 and the XK150 was the first to carry Dunlop disc brakes as standard following their lengthy development on Jaguar sports-racing cars.
