Post-war, under their post-SS new company name of Jaguar Cars Limited, three essentially pre-war designs of pushrod engine were employed; the 1767cc 4-cylinder power unit from Standard and Jaguar‘s own 2 and 3-litre sixes. Transmission was by 4-speed synchromesh gearbox, the brakes mechanically-operated and there were beam axles on the Mk.IV which was made until 1948 when replaced by the Mk.V. Produced in saloon or drophead form with 2664cc or 3485cc engine options, the superseded model‘s bodywork was transformed by improved forward vision and rear-wheel enclosing metal spats. The most important technical improvements were to be found below the skin, however, with front suspension now independent and brakes hydraulically-operated, developments which transformed the Mk.V‘s driveability.
