To save his brother from a vengeful British gangster, Randall ‘Memphis’ Raines and his crew must steal 50 high-end cars within just 72 hours. Each vehicle assigned a female codename, 49 are delivered on time as law enforcement threaten to interrupt the entire operation. But one old flame, “Eleanor”, proves much more troublesome.
Despite Nicholas Cage leading the cast alongside Angelina Jolie, Robert Duvall, Christopher Ecclestone, and even Vinnie Jones, the star of the 2000 film Gone in 60 Seconds is undoubtably “Eleanor”—a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500. The Chip Foose-modified muscle car, which Raines had failed to steal previously, most memorably evades the police with a gravity-defying, slow-motion jump across the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles Harbor.
While the movie has enjoyed cult status rather than being a box office hit, “Eleanor” certainly earned her place in car culture to spawn a variety of imitations. Between 2007 and 2009, only Classic Recreations of Yukon, Oklahoma was officially licensed by Denise Halicki (widow of Henry Blight Halicki, the driving force behind 1974’s original Gone in 60 Seconds) to reproduce the on-screen hero.
Finished in the synonymous “Eleanor” colour scheme of Pepper Grey featuring two full-length Black racing stripes and a black leather interior, the example offered here was completed by Classic Recreations in early 2008 over the course of 2,500 hours. The car, which wears serial number 0019, was specified with a new bodyshell. This is a complete reproduction of a 1967 Mustang Fastback built by Dynacorn under the licence of the Ford Motor Company. Beneath the skin rests a mighty 410 cubic-inch (6.7-litre) Keith Craft Racing V-8 that is fed by a mass flow fuel injection system. Exhaling through side-exit exhausts, the engine delivers a brutish 545 horsepower via a Tremec manual transmission.
Special “Eleanor” touches include the 17-inch Phil Schmidt Engineering wheels, Gone in 60 Seconds badges, and the small matter of a disarmed nitrous system that would be activated by the “Go-Baby-Go” red button on the gear level. The car also features Scat Rally Series 1000 seats, five-point harnesses, a woodgrain aluminium steering wheel, 1967-correct Mustang Deluxe door panels, dashboard, and trim, plus air conditioning and electric mirrors.
An homage to one of the most famous cars in modern cinema history, and with the official blessing of the movie’s makers, this Mustang “Eleanor” by Classic Recreations is certain to attract plenty of attention wherever it goes.
