Ford’s famous fracas with Ferrari drove the development of its original GT40. The Lola-inspired Le Mans dominator has become etched into automotive lore as one of the celebrated American firm’s high-water marks. Testament to its enduring legacy––and to mark Ford’s centenary––Dearborn rebooted its GT40 for the 2002 North American International Auto Show, preceding the production GT by two years. A limited run of just 4,038 GTs worldwide concluded almost precisely 40 years since the GT40’s first win at Circuit de le Sarthe.

Unapologetically reminiscent of its race-winning forebear––though longer, wider, and around 10 centimetres taller––the first year of GT production sold out quickly. Some owners reportedly paid $100k over the $139,995 asking price for a used GT, simply to jump the queue. Its inventive construction centred around an extruded aluminium tubular frame, wrapped in a super-plastic formed aluminium body. Exotic materials continued with the inner engine cover (carbon fibre) and centre console (magnesium alloy).

This first-year GT, one of 217 finished in Midnight Blue Metallic with accompanying stripes and one of 101 cars originally delivered to Europe, also benefits from the optional forged BBS alloy wheels. Offered for sale with its factory-supplied tyre compressor and car cover, the odometer of this Ford GT reads just 7,915 miles at the time of cataloguing.
