The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner represents a milestone in American automotive design as the nation's first production car with a retractable hardtop. Introduced during a transformative year for the Fairlane 500 series, the Skyliner was part of the newly re-styled Fairlane 500 lineup, which featured sleek, low-slung bodies adorned with striking tail fins and luxurious trims. The Skyliner, of course, was the top-of-the-line model; an impressive three inches longer than other 17-foot Fairlane 500 models. At the push of a button, its innovative hardtop folded seamlessly into the trunk, combining the elegance of a coupe with the thrill of open-air driving.
This beautifully restored Fairlane 500 Skyliner is powered by the optional Thunderbird 312 Special V8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor, producing 245 horsepower and an impressive 332 lb-ft of torque. The trim tag records that this Skyliner was originally dressed in Starmist Blue with Colonial White over a Blue Airweave vinyl interior when built at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan plant in 1957. The exterior look is enhanced with its color-matched rear fender skirts boasting an unmistakably clean and stylish appearance, whether the top is up or down. In 2024 the Fairlane was enhanced with four new shock absorbers, new tires, a new battery, and an engine oil change. It is offered with 58,615 miles at the time of cataloging that are believed to be original along with the chance to experience Ford's ingenuity as a forward-thinking trend setter among the world-class crop of 1950s American automotive icons.
