It was a direct replacement for the legendary Ferrari 275 GTB. Built by Scaglietti, the Pininfarina-designed Ferrari Daytona was the work of a young Leonardo Fioravanti, who would go on to pen many other Ferraris including the 512 BB, 308 GTB and Ferrari F40. The Ferrari Daytona’s engine is a larger, longer version of the V12 in the Ferrari 275 GTB/4, with a capacity of 4.4 litres mated to six Weber carburettors, running through a five-speed gearbox. The classic Ferrari’s performance is truly mighty, even by modern standards, with a 1971 road test in Autocar magazine recording a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds for the Daytona, and a top speed of 174mph. This Ferrari Daytona is one of just 158 right-hand-drive cars supplied new in the UK by Maranello Concessionaires. The car was completed at the factory in May 1971 and was delivered and registered to the first owner on June 8th. Its first owner was a true enthusiast for Maranello’s cars, with a run of Ferraris that included a 275 GTB4, Daytona, Berlinetta Boxer and 288 GTO. While in his care, the Daytona covered some 20,000 miles over the first two years of its life. The early history that accompanies this Daytona is the best we’ve ever seen, and shows that it was sold on to its second keeper In October 1973. This gentleman enjoyed it for another year, adding around 8,000 miles to the odometer. The car’s very first MOT certificate remains in the file and documents a total of 28,823 miles in July 1974. That autumn, the Daytona’s owner relocated to Australia and took the car with him. A beautifully preserved letter in the history file from the Ferrari factory, dated 14 October 1974, discusses the conformity requirements for registering the car overseas. For the next 41 years the car remained in Australia, finally being acquired by its most recent overseas owner in 2006. Over the next two years the car was treated to an extensive restoration including a bare-metal repaint in Rosso Chiaro. This lovely Daytona was clearly enjoyed, with another 9,000 miles added to the odometer in this period of ownership. The car was kept meticulously maintained, as evidenced by the stack of invoices detailing the work carried out. This wonderful Daytona is now available for sale in the UK for the first time since 1974. The quality of its recent restoration is clear given the car’s beautiful condition. The interior retains its exquisite and original Veglia Borletti instrument dials and Brico lighter. Accompanying the Daytona is the original leather pouch including the owner’s handbook and service directory, as well as an extensive history file. The last decade of work is detailed in full, and the file even includes the original dark green UK registration booklet from the Greater London Council as well as a full copy of the Maranello Concessionaires archive on the car.
