THIS CAR
This beautifully maintained Daytona is a remarkable example of Maranello’s celebrated V-12 berlinetta, finished in an extremely rare original color scheme, and claiming 28 years of ownership by a well-known Los Angeles-based enthusiast.

According to the research of marque historian Marcel Massini, chassis no. 14191 was desirably equipped with air-conditioning and power windows, and finished in the rare Ferrari color of Oro Chiaro Metallizzato (Light Gold Metallic), an attractive hue that graces the car’s handsome coachwork today.

Completing assembly in March 1971, this powerful Daytona was specified for US export and dispatched to William Harrah’s famed distributorship in Reno, Nevada. Advertised by its first owner in the Los Angeles Times in 1975, the car was purchased by a Pennsylvania resident before passing to Steve Miller of Los Angeles in 1976.

In 1988, the Ferrari was purchased by the consignor, an automotive journalist based in Brentwood, California. As the car was painted yellow by the time of his purchase, the owner chose to repaint the body in Rosso and reupholster the interior in black leather. He also commissioned an engine rebuild by the respected Bruno Borri, the mechanic whose race preparations famously resulted in an incredible 2nd Overall finish for a 365 GTB/4 at the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona. Among other measures, Mr. Borri installed special high-compression pistons and revised the cam profile, resulting in a particularly exhilarating exhaust note.

Following completion of the engine work, the consignor exhibited 14191 at the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance in June 1994, where it was photographed being blessed by Sergio Pininfarina and Luca di Montezemolo. Two months later, the Daytona was presented at the International Ferrari Concours in Monterey, California, and, in August 1997, it participated in the Ferrari 50th Anniversary event held at the Petersen Automotive Museum. A year later, this unique berlinetta was displayed at Concorso Italiano and, in July 2003, it was presented at the Art Center College of Design’s Car Classic. Exhibited again at Rodeo Drive in June 2011, the car graced the famous retail corridor a third time when driven to the Ferrari North America 60th anniversary celebration in October 2014.

While the Daytona was undergoing some sympathetic work in late 2014, gold paint traces were discovered in some gaps. Confirming that the car was originally finished in Oro Chiaro Metallizzato, the owner retained the respected Lasky Coachworks in Los Angeles to execute a repaint in the rare factory color.

With nearly three decades of care by one of Los Angeles’ better-known enthusiasts, featuring a very unusual factory-correct paint color, and offered with a tool roll and owner’s handbooks, this beautifully maintained 365 GTB/4 would complement any collection of exotic sports cars and is sure to be welcomed at FCA events and regional concours d’elegance.
