Launched at Paris in October 1966, Ferrari’s 275 GTB/4 continues to be lauded today not only as the finest expression of the entire 275 series, but also as the marque’s finest V-12 grand touring berlinetta of the 1960s. While the basic chassis was unchanged with the exception of a 24 mm increase in its track dimension, and Pininfarina had already designed an elongated “long nose” treatment promoting greater high-speed stability, a small hood bulge was the only external giveaway of the potent new four-cam model. Designated Tipo 226, the upgraded V-12 engine now featured revised cylinder heads with four overhead camshafts – two per cylinder bank – and developed as much power for the road as Ferrari’s two-cam racing engines. Additional race-proven upgrades applied to the Tipo 226 power unit included dry sump oiling and induction via six twin-choke Weber carburetors. All told, this formidable engine delivered a factory-rated 300 horsepower and propelled the GTB/4 to more than 160 mph. Now, with the four-cam V-12, competition power levels were available to Ferrari’s clients, right off the showroom floor. Consistent with the racing roots of the 275 GTB/4, its sleek coachwork was hand-formed by Scaglietti, Ferrari’s traditional maker of racing bodies.

The engine, driveshaft, and transaxle of the GTB/4 were combined into one sub-assembly, mounted to the chassis at four points, producing a rigid car with superb, neutral handling and near-perfect weight distribution. The 275 GTB/4 continues to be celebrated as an unqualified design and engineering triumph on every possible level, with marque historians citing production of just 330 examples. Although the 275 GTB/4 was a trendsetting road car in so many regards, it also marked the end of an era as the last true dual-purpose Ferrari V-12 berlinetta. Accordingly, many examples led a dual life in period, winning at road courses and hill climbs on weekends while providing glamorous and sporty transportation during the week.

Bearing chassis number 09389, this 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is a particularly special example on many levels, beginning with its known provenance from new and limited ownership roster. According to history compiled by marque expert Marcel Massini, 09389 was completed on 28 December 1966, finished in Rosso Chiaro (Light Red) over Beige leather. Soon thereafter, on 4 January 1967, a pro forma invoice was issued by the Ferrari factory for the car to be shipped to Brussels, Belgium, where it was displayed by Belgian Ferrari importer/dealer Jacques Swaters’ Garage Francorchamps SA at the 40th annual Brussels Motor Show held 16–27 January 1967. Shortly after the show in February 1967, 09389 was delivered new to its first owner, J.J. Molenaar N.V. of Amersfoort, Utrecht, The Netherlands. In May 1968, 09389 returned to the Ferrari factory for service at 15,007 kilometers (9,004 miles). In 1972, the Ferrari was owned by A.J.M. Dries Van der Lof, the owner of a cable-manufacturing company in Haaksbergen, The Netherlands, with the car now repainted black and equipped with added bumper guards, fog lamps, and Campagnolo alloy wheels. Mr. Van der Lof retained 09389 until his passing in August 1990 and the car remained with his family until it was sold by his son Alexander Van der Lof in 2010 to Jos Koster, followed by the current owner, in 2014.

Following acquisition by the consignor, 09389 underwent Ferrari Classiche examination and it was certified on 11 March 2015. The detailed Red Book is included with the car, confirming it retains original mechanical components. In early 2020, the Ferrari was professionally reupholstered in the current green leather treatment and the engine and ancillary components were thoroughly overhauled, as documented by photographs. In addition to the Ferrari Classiche certificate and Red Book, the document file for 09389 is exceptional with copies of the factory production record, the 4 January 1967 pro forma invoice created for the car’s shipment and display at Brussels, an image of the car as shown at Brussels, Dutch registration documents confirming its first two owners, a historical report compiled by marque expert Marcel Massini, and photo-documentation of the most recent mechanical and upholstery work performed. Maintained in a climate-controlled facility, 09389 is offered by a committed collector in exemplary condition, ready to be enjoyed and exhibited by a selective new owner who appreciates the irreplaceable integrity of a classic Ferrari V-12 legend that has never been totally restored.
