The Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta, often referred to as the “Lusso”, is arguably one of the most visually appealing of all Prancing Horse-badged grand tourers. The culmination of the 250 GT platform’s mechanical development, the Lusso was penned by Pininfarina but built by Scaglietti, and is among the most acclaimed automotive designs of all time. Launched at the 1962 Paris Salon, the Lusso—a reference to its luxurious appointments—was fitted with a newly styled interior complemented by a revised dash panel and leather upholstery throughout.

Leaving Maranello on 14 August 1963, chassis 4735 GT was the 84th Lusso built, and sported Pino Verde Metallizzato paintwork on its Scaglietti-built body. Inside, the interior was upholstered in Beige Connolly leather (VM3218), resulting in a seldom seen yet deeply appealing colour combination. A German delivery example, chassis 4735 GT was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show prior to being dispatched to Auto Becker GmbH in Düsseldorf in September 1963.

By late-1964, the 250 GT/L was owned by O. Barchi of Milan, Italy. He kept the car for a number of years, yet by the early 1970s, the Lusso had moved to Switzerland. Later that decade, the Ferrari was noted as being in Austria on temporary registration plates. In 1979, the marque expert, Marcel Massini, notes that chassis 4735 GT was purchased by Pietro Brigato’s company, Old Cars S.r.l., and registered on Vicenza license plates. The car was next driven by Dino Cognolato, whose bodyshop was based in Vigonza, near Padova. On 18 September 1983, Cognolato was spotted driving the car at a Ferrari Days event in Modena.

The Ferrari had returned to Switzerland by November 1985, and was bought by Eric Traber. Under his care, the car was repainted dark green while the interior was reupholstered in tan leather. Traber kept the car in his collection for almost 20 years before eventually selling to a Dutch dealer in 2003. Later that year, chassis 4735 GT was exported to the United States. Massini notes that the engine was rebuilt by Patrick Ottis of San Francisco the following year, and in 2005 the car was offered for sale by Fantasy Junction. The Ferrari was sold to a buyer in New York, but returned to the dealership in 2009. It remained unsold until 2011, when it was acquired by a Belgian buyer and was exported to Europe. In 2015, chassis 4735 GT was acquired at auction by the current owner, and has remained in his care since. Ferrari Classiche inspected the car in 2016 and found that it retains its matching-numbers 3.0-litre V-12 engine and gearbox. The rear axle is of the correct type.

In addition to being one of the most beautiful road-going Ferraris ever built, chassis 4735 GT benefits from known provenance, a matching-numbers engine, and a factory-correct exterior colour that is as rare as it is enchanting.

Please note, this vehicle has now received Ferrari Classiche certification, confirming that it retains its matching-numbers engine and gearbox. Its “Red Book” will be despatched to the successful bidder post-sale.
