Chassis No. 3395

Engine No. 3395

Transmission No. 473E

Quite often the Ferrari 250 GT/E is referred to as "Ferrari's first four seater," or perhaps "the car that kept the race department lights on," yet it is so much more. It was the most popular Ferrari of its day, one that allowed Ferrari to expand their global dealer network, and a car which Road & Track referred to as "not only a grand, but glorious, touring car." Of course, the heart of any Ferrari of the era is its mighty 3.0-liter V12 Gioacchino Colombo-designed engine noted in period road tests to provide smooth acceleration with full throttle even while in top gear at low speeds. Pininfarina bodied both the GT/E Coupe 2+2 and the GT Cabriolet with the 2+2's elegant and rakish coachwork suiting the 250 GT Coupe's existing 2,600-mm wheelbase with aplomb.

Ferrari counts 957 GT/Es produced in three series between late 1960 and 1963. This 250 GT/E hails from the 1962 model year as a Series II model with the majority of the changes between the first two series visible in the interior, particularly on the dashboard. As confirmed by its Classiche Red Book, chassis number 3395 was originally finished in Azzurro with a Pelle Beige interior delivered to Parisian dealer Franco-Brittanic Autos in March 1962. Furthermore, the Classiche certification records that the car retains its original Tipo 128 E engine, Tipo 508 E transmission with overdrive, and Pininfarina bodywork. A comprehensive ownership report compiled by Nicolas Maier notes that it was first sold to Parisian Robert Kalm that May. At the end of 1963, Kalm sold the car through Franco-Brittanic to Jean Paul Pic of Bergerac who would retain the car until 1968. That year ownership transferred to Gérard Gurlow who resided in Biarritz on the southwest Atlantic coast of France, perhaps the perfect setting for the Ferrari!

The file notes that by 1972 the car was under the care of Harvey J. Haight, an American from Wisconsin living in the Mediterranean city of Marseille, France. Numerous invoices on file detail the work completed under his 35-year ownership that lasted from 1980 to 2006 when it was sold to Bertrand Depaillat of Lyon. In 2008, the car was offered for public sale landing with a German owner who commissioned Kipke Automobile to conduct a thorough inspection and interior refresh. The next year an invoice records Kipke conducted over 36,000 € in additional restorative work and repairs focused on the 3.0-liter V12, engine compartment cosmetics, the braking system, and electrics. By 2011, the car resided with a new German owner based in Hamburg with invoices recording further servicing by Kipke. The most thorough service in recent years came at the hands of Modena Motorsport in 2013 with a complete rebuild of its matching-numbers engine touching all important points from block to crank to heads. With parts and labor, the rebuild was invoiced at just over 55,000 €. In 2015, the 2+2 was acquired by the consignor who shortly thereafter applied for Ferrari Classiche certification that revealed that the car retained its original engine, four-speed transmission with overdrive, and Pininfarina bodywork. Subsequent invoices reveal additional work in recent years by Modena Motorsport, further evidence of the constant care lavished on this special Ferrari GT that features approximately 5,000 kilometers since its engine overhaul.

The combination of the 1960s, a V12, Pininfarina styling, and Ferrari can be an intoxicating mix for some. Add in a dose of practicality with 2+2 seating, its all-important Classiche certification, and a lengthy history file, this 1962 250 GT/E Pininfarina Coupe 2+2 Series II eagerly awaits its next caretaker as one of Ferrari's most glorious touring cars.
