For Jean Daninos and Jacques Persin, all their hopes now rested on the Facel III … A successor to the Facellia, the Facel III was presented and went on sale in April 1963. It was the result of an agreement made between Facel Vega and Volvo to replace the troublesome Pont-à-Mousson engine. It was then fitted with the B18B engine and gearbox from the Swedish company, which were perfectly adapted to the Facellia’s engine compartment and provided improved reliability and performance. As elegant as ever, its styling remained just as delicate, with some detail changes bringing it closer to its ‘big sister’, the Facel II.
Delivered new to the dealer in Lyon, Dumond Frères, and first registered in July 1963, this Facel III left Facel Vega’s workshops with its metallic red paintwork and a black interior, a combination which it has retained to the present day. According to the register of the Amicale Facel, its first owner, Monsieur Maugat, ordered it with a dashboard-mounted clock, wheel trims, overdrive and a 4.56 axle ratio. Since then, we understand that it never left the Lyon area and that it had four owners before Francis Staub came across it in 2013. At the time, the car had been advertised for sale by a dealer in northern France since the end of 2012. According to the papers with the car, it had been largely restored: the brakes by Etient in 2002, the engine from 2003-2004 and the bodywork in 2010.
Painstakingly maintained by Francis Staub’s two mechanics, this car is in good condition and operating order. Inside, the leather and carpets have been well preserved, as has the superb dashboard. As far as the engine is concerned, the car starts readily and proves very pleasant to drive, thanks to its overdrive and light steering. There can be no doubt that this elegant four-seat coupé will give its new owner a great deal of pleasure.
