In 1977, Elite Heritage Motors of Elroy, Wisconsin established the Duesenberg II program, reviving one of pre-war motoring's most distinguished marques. Under the direction of noted restoration specialist Richard Braund, the company crafted exceptional vehicles that maintained the Duesenberg brother's uncompromising standards of performance, style, and hand-built luxury. Each Duesenberg II was constructed using faithfully reproduced parts and styles, built upon a massive 153.5-inch wheelbase chassis with a modern Ford-derived drivetrain.
This stunning 1981 example showcases striking, two-tone metallic green and white bodywork inspired by Gordon Buehrig's celebrated 1933 Duesenberg SJ Weymann Speedster design. Originally commissioned by Terrance Adderly, this example is one of approximately 27 Boattail Speedsters produced and has only had three owners from new. It resided in Adderly's renowned collection alongside his pre-war Duesenbergs for a number of years before passing to a Boca Raton-based collector. The current owner acquired the car in 2022 and has continued its excellent preservation, driving it sparingly and keeping it in climate-controlled storage when not in use. Also under current ownership, the Duesenberg has benefitted from numerous improvements including a set of chrome wire wheels mounted with wide whitewall tires, Trippe Safety Lights, a correct wood-rimmed steering wheel and floor-mounted shifter, and a rally timer.
Today, the car presents in superb condition, including its paintwork, chrome bumpers, grille, trim, and polished stainless steel external exhaust pipes. The tan convertible top and matching interior provide an elegant complement to the exterior finish. The Speedster is powered by a 351 cu-in Ford V8 engine paired with a C6 three-speed automatic transmission, offering reliable modern performance and ease of maintenance. Modern amenities are discreetly integrated, including power-assisted front disc brakes, air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, and a period Craig push-button AM/FM radio with Jensen speakers. The dashboard features Stewart Warner instrumentation set within an engine-turned panel, including a 160-mph speedometer and full complement of auxiliary gauges.
Reported to be a very nice runner, this fine Duesenberg II remains a perfect fit for any enthusiast looking to experience the thrill of owning a Duesenberg without spending the seven-figure sum typically required to place one in any great collection of American icons.
