In December 1928, BMW took over Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. The firm continued production of the Dixi 3/15, which had been built under license from the Austin Motor Company since 1927 and was based on the popular Austin 7. The earliest examples of the Dixi-made 3/15—known as the DA-1, standing for Erste Deutsche Ausführung, or “first German version”—were made of parts manufactured in Germany, and the model was a left-hand-drive interpretation of the English design. The DA-1 was powered by a 748 cc engine, with an output of 15 PS. In March 1929, BMW designed a new body and assumed manufacturing responsibilities for the successor to the Dixi 3/15 DA-1, known as the BMW 3/15 DA-2.

This 1928 Dixi 3/15 DA-1 was bodied as an Open Tourer and built in late-1928, towards the end of DA-1 production. Supplied new to Kayser Garage of Memmingen, it was first registered on 7 January 1929. The car was acquired by Georg Müller in the 1960s, who is said to have restored it, and kept the Dixi until his passing in 1993. In 2015, the German title was cancelled, and this DA-1 entered the current owner’s collection, where it was kept on museum display. As a result of its time on static display, buyers are advised that this car should undergo mechanical inspection prior to returning to road use.

Today this Dixi is finished in a charming shade of sage, with black arches and running boards. It offers a chance for BMW collectors to acquire a vehicle that marks the birth of the famous marque as an automobile manufacturer.
