Chassis No. THPNMK03682

Engine No. 02686

Alejandro De Tomaso's Pantera, the iconic Italian-American sports car, made its debut in the early 1970s, born from a desire to create a high-performance, mid-engine thoroughbred that could compete with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. The Pantera's genesis can be traced back to a collaboration between Alejandro De Tomaso, an Argentinean entrepreneur with a passion for racing, and Ford Motor Company which could provide funding, horsepower, and U.S. distribution for his new creation. The result was a unique fusion of Italian design and American muscle, as the Pantera boasted a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 engine and was retailed through Ford's massive Lincoln-Mercury dealership network. The unexpected exotic offered a sleek appearance from Carrozzeria Ghia with a low-slung body and pop-up headlights, while its mid-rear-engine layout ensured exceptional handling and balance.

Debuting in 1971, the hand-built nature of early Panteras were on full display, yet by 1972, with Ford's involvement, the cars coming out of Modena, Italy became more refined. From new body panel stampings to more power from the 351 V8 via a Cobra Jet camshaft, the 1972 model quickly became the one to have. According to the accompanying Deluxe Marti Report, this 1972 Pantera was completed in Modena, Italy in June 1972 destined for the U.S. It was sold on 6 November 1972 through long-time Lincoln-Mercury dealer Fore River Motors in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Approximately 15 years ago the Pantera is noted to have received fresh paint (Chrysler Inferno Red Crystal) and a refresh to its chrome work. Today, the consigner notes that the car retains its original 351 cu-in "Cleveland" V8 and likely its five-speed ZF transmission. It wears 15-inch Campagnolo wheels, an appropriate and correct look among the many today that sport much heavier wheels. The car features an electronic ignition conversion, a Centerforce clutch and flywheel installed within the last 3,000 miles, and upgrades to the cooling system. Additional maintenance work noted by the consignor includes new transmission gaskets and seals, a brake system overhaul with a new master cylinder and calipers, a new fuel pump, alternator, and starter motor. The interior is perhaps the best indicator of the mileage, which is believed to be original, with an expected degree of originality, save a stereo upgrade. It is offered with a partial toolkit, owner's manual, ZF transmission manual, and Deluxe Marti Report confirming its original build details.
