For years the Citroën DS was known by many nicknames in many countries such as the frog, frog's mouth, shark, pike, flying saucer or goddess (translated from the French DeeSse) now this unique classic had regained its official model name. This does not detract from the fact this Frenchman deserves it own chapter in any classic car book. From the first incarnation with single headlamps to later version with their glass covered headlights, the DS was always ahead of its time and so remains a great car in both appearance and drivability.
This gray Citroën DS 23 Injection Electronique, quite a mouthful by the way, is exactly as many like to see him; a lovely subdued color showing off its alluring lines combined with a chocolate brown leather interior. This one has been properly restored. It has the most powerful engine available, the 4-cylinder 2,347 cc with 141 hp. It has a semi-automatic gearbox, making travel a doodle whether it is on the Dutch A2 or French Autoroute.
Very fine would be the correct description of the DS’s bodywork. The panel work, doors, bonnet and boot lid all are in very nice shape. The same can be said of the anthracite gray, sorry Gris Brumaire (AC092), paintwork. The black vinyl roof covering contrasts beautifully with the gleaming metallic finish. All the bright work and rubbers were replaced during the restoration are therefore in great condition. The doors shut properly with a satisfying clunk, a feature not always present in other DS’s.
The interior is exactly as we like to find; in a wonderful state with leather that has not just come from the upholsterer but rather has that nice lived in vibe. The leather is not worn or showing any significant wear but has simply become more attractive with time and use. On further inspection beautiful chrome details, a well-appointed dashboard and lovely soft “chamois bouclé” carpeting greets you. Behind you there is a typical period feature with the Gradalux blinds.
The 2.3 litre DX5 engine with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system is a joy to drive. In 2018 the car had a full mechanical overhaul. The engine runs and sounds tremendously sweet with the kind of silky soft ride you expect in a DS of this class. Maintenance was left to the experts. Wholly fitting with the state of the rest of the car, the floor is in very good condition. On inspection there are signs of use, but there does not appear to have been any work done and none is needed.
You really do not want to miss out on this DS if you are looking for one of the most comfortable classics around.
