Henri Chapron was a prominent Parisian coachbuilder of Art Deco-style automobiles in the 1930s. Following WWII, the need for such coachwork was diminishing. In 1958, with the introduction of the new Citroën DS, Chapron decided to create hand-built custom bodies without the support of Citroën. Chapron was initially required to purchase complete cars, but eventually he partnered with Citroën and purchased bare chassis.

The Le Caddy convertible was introduced in 1959 and was the first of the Chapron-bodied DS models to feature single-piece rear fenders. The earliest Le Caddy models utilized the doors from the Berline, which were lengthened in 1960. That same year, the Le Caddy was joined by the Le Dandy, a gorgeous coupe variation of the Le Caddy. The Le Dandy was produced from 1960 to 1972, and only approximately 50 examples were built, each featuring unique equipment. This Le Dandy was invoiced on May 16, 1963, to an air transport company in Paris. The Citroën passed through the hands of two subsequent French individuals before being acquired by the Mullin Collection in 2016. Since then, it has been on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California.
