Beschreibung
Chassis No. 194677S120566
Engine No. 7120566 V053IHO
Introduced in 1963, the Corvette "Sting Ray" C2 series (1963–1967) is renowned for its elegance and sporting design. Engineered by Zora Arkus-Duntov, these Corvettes were offered with an enormous range of engine, transmission, and performance options. While many focus on the "big blocks" of the era, the 327 cu-in engines with their low-weight and ample torque and power are considered the practical favorite, especially when selected as a Convertible and fitted with the thunderous side-mount exhaust.
According to its body paint and trim plate, this 1967 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible's body was produced on 24 May 1967 at the A.O. Smith plant. Finished in rare Tuxedo Black and fitted with White/Black vinyl upholstery, the production number "120566" on the chassis tag aligns properly with known monthly GM production number data. The two-part engine pad serial number stamp "7120566 V053IHO" indicates that this engine was built at Chevrolet's Flint, Michigan plant on 31st of May with the last two characters "HO" identifying the engine specification as a 327 cu-in / 300-horsepower V8 with 10.0:1 compression ratio, a four-barrel Holley carburetor, and Powerglide transmission. The remaining numbers indicate 1967 production followed by the sequential body production number "120566," matching the aluminum serial number tag located under the glove box.
According to the accompanying NCRS Shipping Data Report, this Sting Ray was completed on 12 June 1967 destined for Dick Flick Chevrolet in Enterprise, Alabama. Also accompanying the car is its Chevrolet Protection Plan booklet with Protect-O-Plate noting a sales date of 28 June and its original owner R.D. Wheeler, also of Enterprise. It is believed that the Sting Ray was kept in the same family for a number of years transferring to Sonni Wheeler in High Point, North Carolina. In 2013 after his passing, the car was acquired by Russell Baltzer and sent to Dixie Corvette of nearby Kernersville for a body-off restoration. Invoices for parts and photos taken during the restoration are on file and available for review. During restoration, an optional side-mount exhaust system was fitted to further accentuate the V8's rumble.
In 2022, this Tuxedo Black Sting Ray was acquired by the consignor and shortly thereafter in November 2022, was sent to a marque specialist in Atlanta, Georgia, for engine work that included work to the heads, coolant leak fixes, fresh fluids and gaskets, and adjustments for rough running. A short month later, new BF Goodrich redline tires were installed by ACI Motorsports along with a rebuilt brake caliper. Most recently in February 2024, ACI performed an oil change, replaced the power steering hoses, and installed new Bilstein shock absorbers. Today this final-year C2 Corvette Sting Ray, finished in rare Tuxedo Back, is offered with just over 1,000 miles since its restoration and, along with recent servicing, offers drop-top fun with American V8 power.
