The release of the Veyron 16.4 in 2005 reignited the battle to build the fastest production car on the planet. McLaren’s F1 had reigned supreme for two decades before the W-16-powered Bugatti clocked 408.47 km/h at the Ehra-Lessien test track. That new yardstick encouraged competition from Koenigsegg, Hennessey, and SSC. Yet the original inspiration for the Veyron’s straight-line prowess had never been to merely beat other road cars.

Former Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, was Porsche’s motorsport boss when the fearsome 917 chalked a record 362 km/h at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That benchmark stood for some 17 years until a specially modified Peugeot took to the Mulsanne Straight with the sole aim of achieving the highest top speed. That P88 prototype hit 407 km/h to ultimately give Piëch a target to one day eclipse.

Mission successfully completed for the Veyron, once the 300 coupés were spoken for, Bugatti unveiled the Grand Sport at Pebble Beach in 2008. Recognised for its removable polycarbonate roof and powered by the same 8-litre engine fed by four turbochargers to famously deliver 1,001 PS, the new model became the fastest roadster in the world.

The Veyron 16.4 proved particularly popular in the Middle East. Accordingly, as Bugatti released a series of special edition cars and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2009, the one-off ‘Soleil de Nuit’ example offered here was conceived for the region. Presented at that year’s Dubai International Motor Show, the lower portion of the bodywork was finished in Polished Aluminium, with the top surfaces painted Black Blue Metallic. The underside of the rear wing was Italian Red. The car also gained distinctive diamond-cut wheels as worn by the ‘Sang Noir’ limited run of 12 cars inspired by the Type 57S Atlantic. Meanwhile, the interior was trimmed with Burnt Orange leather and capped off by ‘Soleil de Nuit’ logos stitched on the headrests and plates mounted on the centre console and door sills.

Fittingly for a unique Veyron 16.4 built especially for the Middle East, this car was first owned by the Kuwaiti royal family, who took delivery in February 2010. Records show that the Veyron enjoyed annual services through to 2014, after which it returned to the Bugatti headquarters at Molsheim for a May 2016 service and the fitment of new tyres. After a stint with a second keeper, the ‘Soleil de Nuit’ was acquired from Dubai in 2016 by the current custodian, who is based in Germany. A November 2017 service invoice (available to view on file) from official Bugatti partner Kamps in Hamburg shows a maintenance bill that totals €20,632. In the care of the consigning owner, the Veyron was maintained by Bugatti Zurich, with the seller subscribing to the two-year Bugatti Service Plan at a cost of €58,000 verified by an invoice issued in July 2024 (also available to view on file).

This remarkable one-off Grand Sport now displays 11,624 kilometres at the time of cataloguing and is accompanied by its factory accessory box, famous speed key to achieve the top speed, original Bugatti owner’s manuals, service book, and car cover.

The Veyron 16.4 was arguably the definitive hypercar for the entirety of its 2005 to 2015 production. To acquire this unique ‘Soleil de Nuit’ example of an open-top Grand Sport variant is a truly remarkable opportunity that should not be missed.
