After being teased at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show, the E46 generation M3 finally made its full debut in Geneva in March the following year. The most performance-oriented version would appear in 2002, wearing the historic moniker CSL—or Coupe Sport Leichtbau. A full 110 kilograms lighter than the production M3, the CSL made extensive use of carbon fibre, glass-reinforced plastic, and thinner-gauge glass, going so far as to have a fully carbon fibre roof. Just 1,383 examples would leave the Regensburg factory between June and December of 2003.

The example offered was finished in Silver Grey Metallic—one of just two colour options available—while the interior was trimmed in Amaretta synthetic suede and Reflex cloth. Built on 4 July 2003, this M3 CSL is an early production example that was destined for Japan and specified with the highly desirable six-speed automated manual transmission. It was further specified with headlamp washers, parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and Xenon headlamps. At time of cataloguing, the odometer read just 4,698 kilometres, and the car is accompanied by its jack, selected BMW manuals, and a tyre inflator. Please note, that having spent some years on static display as part of the consigning owner’s museum exhibition, a mechanical inspection is advised before returning this car to the road, while this lot is offered for sale without registration papers.

This is an incredible time-warp example of the lauded CSL, representing the swansong of the straight-six-powered BMW M3.
