Replacing the BMW 600 in 1959, the 700 was the first BMW model built with a monocoque chassis and was first announced in both two-door sedan and coupe versions, with a convertible added subsequently. The rear-mounted flat twin cylinder motor was based on the 600 and displaced 697cc, had a single Solex 34PCI carburettor and developed 30 bhp. Improved brakes and rack and pinion steering made endowed the 700 with excellent driving characteristics. Introduced at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 700 was well received in Germany and performed well in motorsport, with Hans Stuck winning the 1960 German Hillclimb Championship in one, while Walter Schneider took out the 1961 German Saloon Car title. Later variants included the 700 Sport, with twin carburettors, and the Luxus on a longer (2,280mm) wheelbase. The final version was the 700 LS model of 1964, with more power and equipment.
