Please note that this lot is titled by the engine number and the make is reflected as Isetta.

By the mid-1950s, West Germany had begun to recover from the turmoil of World War II, and its population was no longer satisfied with the tiny “microcars” being provided for their transportation by local automakers. Seeing fertile ground for new products, BMW decided to enter the fray.

Their new car, shown to the public in September 1957, was a startling reinvention of the Isetta theme. It was freshly styled with skillfully rendered, sharp accents from Michelotti and a Pininfarina-styled headlamp area. The lengthened chassis now seated four and was advanced for its time, with individual coil-over shocks at each corner allowing for considerably more vertical travel than that of the Isetta. Access to the rear seat was by a door, with fashionable frameless glass, on the right side. The lively, reliable flat twin engine was isolated in the back and provided enough power to attain 60 mph and permit genuine long-distance family outings.

The two-tone 600 presented for sale here is a superb example, being the subject of a multi-year full restoration to factory-correct standards. Finished in a charming blend of green over cream with matching two-tone interior trim, the car is accompanied by over 100 invoices documenting the exhaustive restoration process which was freshly completed in 2024. The car is powered by a correct 582-cubic-centimeter two-cylinder engine while its 57,090-kilometer (~35,475-mile) odometer reading at cataloging is believed to be accurate. The wonderful presentation found throughout is a testament both to the quality of the car’s restoration as well as the maintenance it has received under the consignor’s 32 years of ownership.

Pleasing to all who encounter it, this lovely microcar can continue to immediately be shown, driven, and enjoyed, while its next caretaker rests assured that fuel costs, and parking, will never be at issue.
