The Austin-Healey adventure started with the 100, or 100-4 BN-1 in full. Not really a sexy name to be honest but the car itself made everything alright. The design was down to one Gerry Coker and is considered to be one of the most successful designs of all times. After a few 4-cylinder versions, 1956 saw the arrival of the first 6-cylinder, a 2.6 litre engine that came out of the Austin Westminster. Two years later the moment finally arrives when the Big Healey comes along. A 2.9 litre BMC C-series six-cylinder that has a large following. The one we have here is one of exceptional quality.
Let us start with some facts about this car: This Healey has been owned by the same person for the last twenty years, the car has a Heritage Trust Certificate, is a matching numbers car and has been restored to perfection. Well having said that we shall go back to our story where we shall revisit the matters later on.

The 3000 Mk2 BJ7 you see before you is a 1962 Convertible 2+2. The Convertible connotation means this is a luxury version with the round front screen and winding side windows. The hood itself is faster and easier to use. A very complete version in other words with that juicy 2.9 litre straight-six under the bonnet. This Big Healey started life, as so many did, in America, in Florida to be precise. In 1990 the car was exported to England before arriving in the Netherlands in 2000. In 2002 the last owner took possession and has been its custodian for the last twenty years.

That owner arranged for the car to be fully and professionally restored. Money was not of the essence and the same holds true for its consequent maintenance. The panelwork is truly brilliant with great paintwork and sublime alignment. This Healy looks the part and presents in a rust-free and undamaged state. The same goes for the chassis too, it is in peak condition with a reinforced u-beam behind the gearbox adding stiffness. The interior condition is in line with the rest of the car. Pure beauty as far as the eye stretches. A stunning dashboard with lovely Smith gauges, great, immaculately clad, bucket seats and small seats in the rear. Carpets and switching gear and hood are all pristine.
The pile of (very well specified) invoices is substantial. Since 2002 the bill tally stands at nearly € 70,000! The current owner had the car inspected annually, maintained and repaired when needed at a specialist firm. Since completion of the overhaul in 2009 some 25,000 miles has been travelled.
The driving experience with this Healey is outstanding. No surprise this British Roadster feels as if has just left the factory. The three-litre six-cylinder is very supple with upgrades such as the K&N air-filters, sports exhaust, a performance inlet manifold and “123” ignition adding to performance. The engine was tuned on a rolling road and delivers a perfect flat torque curve; between 2,100 and 4,200 rpm 230 Nm of torque is available.

We can be certain this Austin-Healey 3000 is in a class of its own. Restored, matching numbers, Heritage Certificate, a huge pile of invoices and an owner who not only enjoyed his car for twenty years but took care to such an extent bound to cause jealousy in many a partner. Now all work has been done there will be no need for your partner’s jealousy, although you might be found a bit more often in the garage with a polishing cloth.
