The 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 (American Roadster 1) is a masterpiece born from the collaboration between Aston Martin and Italian design house Zagato. Created as a roadster variant of the DB7 Zagato coupe, the AR1 was a limited edition designed exclusively for the American market. Unveiled at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show, this fully open roadster featured timeless Zagato design elements, including a large egg-crate front grille, muscular fenders, a steeply raked windshield, and distinctive raised headrest fairings that echoed the iconic "Double Bubble" roofline of earlier Zagato models.
Built on the DB7 Volante chassis, the AR1 was powered by a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 producing 435 horsepower, with a six-speed manual transmission preferred by enthusiasts. Its performance was exceptional, achieving zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph, complemented by a throaty exhaust note and precise handling.
The 12th of just 99 examples produced, this DB AR1 was originally finished on December 2003 and delivered to the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Aston Martin Racing Green over Dark Tan quilted leather seating with Light Tan piping, Brown carpeting, and body color Racing Green accented door panel and dash trim. In 2006, it was acquired by its second owner, with just 681 miles noted in the clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report. Acquired by the consigner in 2019, a mere 1,700 miles were added to the tally in those intervening years. By all accounts, the car has been treated like the coachbuilt collectible it is, with a recent review of the car in March 2024.
Today, this limited edition-just one of 99 examples produced-is offered with just 2,514 miles at the time of cataloging, its original Owner's Guide, first aid kit, and its fitted serialized car cover. The DB AR1 combined exquisite Zagato styling and thrilling performance in equal measure, cementing its status as one of the most desirable vehicles to emerge from Gaydon and a sure-fire favorite among those searching for a coachbuilt Aston Martin with double-digit rarity.
