Unveiled at Earls Court in 1965, the Aston Martin DB6 marked the end of an era for the Newport Pagnell marque. Whereas its successor—the William Towns-designed DBS—would adopt a more angular aesthetic, the DB6 was an obvious evolution of the DB4 and DB5. Yet although visually similar to the Superleggera models, the DB6 was more spacious and easier to live with—especially in Mk 2 guise, gaining wider wheels and power-assisted steering, providing a more modern driving experience. The 240 km/h DB6 was also faster than its forebears, while lessons learnt at Le Mans meant it was more aerodynamically efficient. A quantifiably better car that retained many key points of the iconic Carrozzeria Touring styling, the DB6 is rightly coveted by discerning collectors.
Presented in factory-correct Silver Birch with beautifully mellowed black hide, chassis DB6MK2/4156/R is a rare example of the desirable Mk 2. Built in January 1970 and supplied by Plough Motors of Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, it is believed to have left the factory with an electronic fuel injection-type engine, which was later upgraded to Vantage specification—in-keeping with the “VC” suffix of the engine number stamp. True to its role as a cosseting grand tourer, the car benefits from an automatic transmission—making for relaxed city driving, as well as towering cross-country performance. Having seen little recent use, this magnificent machine will require a mechanical inspection prior to being driven, and is begging to be returned to the road after a period of static display.
