The first Aston Martin to be engineered at Newport Pagnell following the company’s departure from Feltham in 1964, the DB6 was launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1965, just one month after production had started. The model ran until July 1969 with a total of 1,327 saloons built before the Mk. II version arrived. Refined from the previous DB4/DB5, this model change involved more structural engineering rather than mechanical, as Aston Martin realised market appeal sought larger rear seat space. Increased wheelbase was achieved with an additional four inches inserted ahead of the rear arches and combined with a two inch increase to the roof line, the DB6 gained capacity for a comfortable rear seat. A ‘Superleggera’ Grand Tourer for the family man was introduced that offered 60mph in seven seconds whilst luxuriating in Connolly leather and Wilton carpeting. The 60’s DB6 driver also benefitted from electric windows and in-car suspension adjustment courtesy of the Armstrong Selectaride system. Visually, a split front bumper offered intake for the large oil cooler whilst the rear became instantly recognisable with an aero-efficient ‘Kamm tail’ which featured a small upswept spoiler reducing lift. This fabulous example comes with automatic transmission and is presented in one of the most desirable colour combinations of Dubonnet Red with a superb grey leather interior, the heady aroma of which is so evocative. The extensive history file contains information from the DVLA stating the first owner was Mr Jack Bowley from Ilkeston, Derbyshire who took delivery on 19th November 1965 and enjoyed this DB6 for 19 years before selling it in December 1984. The Aston did not travel far, a mere two miles to new owner Albert Draper who also became a long-term custodian until October 2001. After which it headed south and became the property of Brooklands Motor Company in Weybridge, who sold it to the current owner in February 2002. The paper trail also confirms the car was originally blue and held a taxation class of ‘disabled’. Invoices show an outlay of over £36,000 on parts alone, the vast majority being genuine Aston Martin or heritage suppliers and sourced by the current owner after extensive research, covering the restoration period between 2011 to 2015. Panel and frame work cost another £30,000, taking some 500 hours with a body off chassis restoration plus alloy fabrication and prep work all carried out by Aston Martin Specialist Alan Smith Motors based in Kent. The same company continued with the engine rebuild to 4.2, incorporating re-ground crank, bearings, pistons etc. plus rebuilt cylinder head, all of which totalled £18,000. A photographic record has been compiled and will be supplied in digital form with the history. In the region of £100k was lavished on this DB6 and once completed the car passed its MoT on 4th August 2015. The odometer at that time read 40,621 miles; a mere 172 less than its current reading some five years later. The Dubonnet Red paint is flawless, a mirror finish to be precise, whilst the interior trim presents no faults, blemishes or signs of wear. Every dial, gauge and switch operates as it should including one concession to modern living, the period correct Motorola enjoys new internals offering up to date radio reception with your in-car entertainment. On the road the DB6 comes alive, the healthy straight six pulls the 1468kg with enthusiasm whilst the three speed Borg-Warner gearbox offers positive engagement. An overall driving experience that feels showroom fresh five decades on; a model that boasts clientele including Prince Charles, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger reborn with this example courtesy of one custodian who demanded perfection whatever the cost.
