Beschreibung

When the Aston Martin DB4 debuted at the 1958 London Motor Show, its gorgeous design and impressive performance stunned the public. Designed by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, the DB4 utilized the coachbuilder’s Superleggera (Super light) construction, resulting in strong yet lightweight bodywork. The shape of the DB4 became the basis for the DB5 and DB6 that followed, creating a series of vehicles that are considered to be some of the most beautiful cars ever built.

Completed in March 1960, this DB4 is a Series II example that was ordered new by Henry M. Hubshman Jr. of New York City. At the time, Mr. Hubshman was the senior vice president of Citicorp, and he drove the car frequently, using the Aston Martin to commute to his office well into the 1970s. Upon Mr. Hubshman’s passing in 1977, the car was passed to his son-in-law, who shipped it to California in 1987 with the intent to restore it. However, the restoration never commenced and the Aston Martin was eventually acquired by the consignor in 2013.

The consignor had Classic Investments of Englewood, Colorado, perform an extensive restoration and, during that time, the DB4 was refinished in the striking period Aston Martin color of Oyster Shell that it wears today. Invoices on file total over $475,000 for this meticulous restoration work. The DB4’s original build record notes that it was equipped from new with the rare option of fitted luggage, so Classic Investments reproduced a fantastic four-piece luggage set, which accompanies the car today. More recently, the Aston Martin’s engine was rebuilt and upgraded to 4.2-litre specification by RW Engineering of Scottsdale, Arizona, and fitted with three Weber 45 DCOE sidedraft carburetors for increased performance. Additional upgrades include a five-speed gearbox along with improved cooling and oiling systems.

Upon completion of the restoration in 2015, the car was displayed at numerous shows around the country, winning First in Class at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2016, Best of Show at the 2016 Colorado Concours d’Elegance & Exotic Sports Car Show, and First in Class at the 2016 Concours d’Elegance of America in Plymouth, Michigan.

The DB4 is accompanied by the three SU carburetors removed for the Weber conversion, manual, tool kit, jack, documentation, copy of factory build record, Aston Martin Heritage Trust Collections Research Report, and the aforementioned fitted luggage. The DB4 is heralded as one of Aston Martin’s most beautiful designs, and they are an absolute joy to drive, blending a sporting character with comfortable long-distance touring capability. This example, with its outstanding restoration, stunning color, documentation, and mechanical upgrades, is sure to appeal to astute collectors of 1960s GT cars.
