Working without the aid of computers or wind tunnels, Franco Scaglione relied on his intuitive understanding of airflow and aesthetic sensibility to create some of the most striking and efficient automobile shapes of the mid-20th century. His prolific career, spanning more than two decades, saw him leave an indelible mark on the Italian carrozzeria tradition. Notably, Scaglione's influence shaped two iterations of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta: the original Sprint and the avant-garde Sprint Speciale. His creative zenith coincided with a fruitful partnership with Nuccio Bertone, during which he produced some of his most celebrated and forward-thinking designs.
The Sprint Speciale, unveiled at the 1957 Turin Motor Show, embodied concepts first explored in Bertone's BAT (Berlina Aerodynamica Technica) series and Carrozzeria Touring's Disco Volante sports racing cars of the early 1950s. Initially built on the agile Giulietta chassis, the Sprint Speciale's popularity saw its continuation when the Giulia series was introduced in 1962. The Giulia's larger and more powerful 1,570-cc twin-cam engine paired with the Sprint Speciale's aerodynamic profile, low frontal area, and remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.29, enabled it to achieve a top speed of 191 km/h-an unprecedented feat for a small-displacement car of its era.
This particular Giulia Sprint Speciale, first registered on 22 November 1963 according to Italian registration documents, beautifully exemplifies Scaglione's aerodynamic mastery. Presented in period-correct Bluette-an elegant blue-green finish that accentuates its flowing lines-the Alfa was originally delivered to the coastal town of Fano on Italy's eastern shore. Registration papers record that the car passed through a several Italian owners from the late 1960s through the 1980s, with Automotoclub Storico Italiano (ASI) registration dated March 1997 placing the Sprint Speciale under the ownership of Graziello Bucci of Pesaro. Images on file indicate that the car underwent a complete restoration under the subsequent ownership of Dr. Franco Ronchi before transitioning to the collection of Milanese enthusiast Guido Artom. The car was then acquired by a Southern California collector who facilitated its importation to the United States.
Acquired by current owner in 2017, the Alfa Romeo was reimported to the EU through Rotterdam, Netherlands, and presents exceptionally well today in its striking color scheme complemented by excellent chrome and a show-quality engine bay. With its spritely 1,570-cc twin-cam engine delivering spirited performance and its eligibility for numerous driving events and club gatherings, this Sprint Speciale would be a superb addition to any collection of rare, coachbuilt Italian sports cars. It is offered with its ACI and ASI registration records and a rare original Giulia SS instruction book.
