THIS CAR
Few automobiles rival the elegance and racing lineage of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport. Consistently regarded by connoisseurs and enthusiasts to be among the most refined Alfa Romeos of the Vittorio Jano era, these rare and sumptuous touring cars set the stage for worldwide excellence and prestige as Italy emerged from the ravages of the war. The origin of the 6C began in 1925 as the newly developed twin-cam 6C engine went on to power formidable race cars and highly refined road cars, achieving numerous racing victories, including 1st and 2nd Place at the 1937 Mille Miglia, and 1st Place at the 1950 Targa Florio, to name a few. The technically sophisticated and capable 6C 2500 Super Sport combined superb engineering, delightful road-going performance, and attractive Batista “Pinin” Farina coachwork, which daringly eschewed flamboyant Art Deco flourishes still lingering in the industry from the previous decade. The clean and refined body design blended headlights, grille, and formerly separate hood and fender lines into a sleek single-envelope body that effortlessly cloaked its racing heritage. The sophisticated 6C 2500 became one of the most expensive and finely appointed cars of the period, attracting worldwide celebrity clientele, particularly those enamored with the highly desirable and rare Super Sport Cabriolet.

On April 22, 1949, Alberto B. Segal, of Pescara, Italy, placed a special order for this 6C 2500 Super Sport Cabriolet, specifying the unique and exquisite color combination of light metallic blue paint accented by a textured red leather interior. The car was further optioned with a multi-band radio and fitted heavy tool kit. Taking delivery in November 1949, Mr. Segal drove his Alfa Romeo for nearly a decade in Italy before deciding in 1959 to embark on an extended holiday in Los Angeles. Mr. Segal imported the car and subsequently used it for his personal enjoyment. Partners Roy Nunnally and Robert Frisbie acquired the car just a few months later. According to an anecdote that has been passed along with the car, they pursued Mr. Segal while he was driving the car through Los Angeles to do so.

In the late ’60s, the Alfa Romeo was partially disassembled for restoration, and changed hands while remaining a project car. As time passed, this Super Sport Cabriolet remained complete but unrestored until the current owner’s purchase in 2011.

A comprehensive and detailed restoration began in 2014, as the 6C 2500 engine, gearbox, differential, and brakes were removed from the car for mechanical inspection and cosmetic evaluation. Each of these parts and subassemblies were finished to a high standard with close attention to correct finishes and authentic details, before being set aside for reassembly. The suspension components and frame were concurrently addressed and authentically finished while the body and paint were prepared and exterior trim parts were test-fit for reassembly. A new wiring harness was installed and electrical systems addressed, while the beautiful instruments, glass and dial faces were sent out for professional restoration. All brightwork was carefully removed, properly straightened, plated, and polished to a show-winning finish. The beautiful pebble-grain red leather interior was matched to original swatches capturing the textured finish originally special ordered by Mr. Segal. The beautiful cabriolet top was expertly handmade using original patterns and finished with plush inner lining. Upon completion in late 2016, this beautifully restored Alfa Romeo 6C was shown at prestigious California concours events, winning several awards including Best in Show in 2017 at the Danville Concours d’Elegance, and Ferndale Concours on Main, and Best in Class in 2018 at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

Accompanied by factory correspondence, numerous restoration photographs and receipts, an original owner’s manual, original keys, sales brochure, jack, and fitted heavy tool kit, this uniquely optioned Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Cabriolet is an elegant work of art representing the very finest in automotive engineering, superb coachwork, and touring excellence. This 6C presents an opportunity to own one of the most beautifully restored Alfa Romeos of the early postwar period.
