Carlo Abarth’s brilliance lay in his ability to turn small-displacement, mass-market cars into truly special creations that were as charismatic as they were successful in competition. This talent is readily evident in the Fiat-Abarth 850 Scorpione Coupé. Though its chassis and mechanicals were derived from the Fiat 600, little remained of the everyday city car once Abarth completed its transformation.

This 850 Scorpione Coupé is one of fewer than 200 believed to have been produced. Having been documented to have spent its earlier years in the United States, the car later returned to Italy in the early-1990s to join The Piccolo Collection. On its return to Europe, the Fiat-Abarth was in need of full restoration. Due to the delicate nature of its aluminium bodywork, the restoration took several years. The work was completed by Stefano Volpi, the former chief race mechanic at Bizzarrini. As part of its sympathetic overhaul, the car was fitted with 12-inch magnesium-alloy racing wheels by Amadori, which it retains. Other appealing details that remain include Abarth-badged Jaeger gauges, while the engine is equipped with Abarth’s famous exhaust manifold, and the generator sports a correct Abarth-made pulley.

Until recently, the 850 Scorpione Coupé had been entered by its consigning owner in noteworthy Italian events such as the Bergamo Historic Grand Prix, Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti, and Mugello Classic. Well-known among Fiat-Abarth enthusiasts and increasingly rare, this Scorpione will be appealing to many for potential entry into eligible races and tours.
