Beschreibung
Most Norton Manx were raced to the ground in their day, so to find one that is matching numbers, and so correct, right down to the cadmium plated hollow engine bolts (for weight saving purposes) is quite unique and rare.
On offer here is a stunning specimen of the Norton Manx, a racer that holds more victories to its belt than any other manufacturer then and now.
The Norton Manx was the ultimate development of the “Carroll” camshaft engine introduced by Norton in 1930 and which had been developed so successfully since then. The Norton Factory Racing Team was quite simply dominating the 350cc and 500cc class in international racing in the 1940s and 1950s.
In the early 1950s this development came to a peak in combination with the famous Featherbed frame. The Norton Manx engine was given a new lease of life with the introduction of the Featherbed frame and was raced successfully until 1961, the last year of production for the Manx.
This particular Norton Manx was delivered new in July 1955 to ‘Arvidson’ in Helsinki, Finland. Not much is known of its early days, clearly it would have been raced but luckily, the original engine and frame combination survived intact.
The engine is very square being 76x76,85mm in bore.
Move forward many years and the Norton Manx was sold to one of the founders of the ‘MC Collection’ in Sweden. A renowned restorer in his own right, he undertook the restoration in the late 1990s and finished it to the high standard in which it still presents itself in.
The Norton Manx was subsequently sold into a prominent family collection featuring many interesting cars and motorcycles, among them a lovely Fraser Nash Le Mans Coupe with impeccable provenance, to name a few. It has now been decided to sell and make the Norton Manx available for someone else to enjoy.
Noteworthy original features worth mentioning are:
Long neck Amal GP carburettor as fitted to Norton Manx only.
Rubber mounted Smiths rev counter.
Lucas racing magneto.
Manx close ratio gearbox.
Original Manx clip ons with levers brazed on to the handlebar.
Megaphone with reverse cone as fitted to the 350cc Manx only.
Original ‘elephants foot’ oil tank.
Genuine Manx hubs in magnesium front and rear.
All nuts and bolts cadmium plated as per original.
Hollow engine bolts and other bolts drilled for lightness as per original spec.
In short, this is a unique 1955 Norton Manx in stunning condition that would be equally at home on display or on track.
It will need a very light recommissioning (change of oil, clean plug, put petrol) before being run.
