BMW had only begun manufacturing motorcycles in the early-1920s—World War I reparations halted aircraft engine construction, forcing the company to diversify its product portfolio—but by the end of the decade, it was leading the way. Engineers at the Bavarian marque quickly found a winning formula, with BMW bikes characterised by a “boxer” engine with horizontally opposed pistons delivering power via shaft drive.
The R63 was revealed in 1928, unveiled alongside the R62 as part of the company’s 750 cc model range, and positioned as the sportier of the two bikes. The R63 was given a factory-rated power output of 25 PS, and BMW proved its worth by campaigning the bike as part of its Works racing team.
The motorcycle offered here was built in 1929, as one of 794 examples made, and delivered to its first owner in Switzerland. After World War II, it is said that the R63 formed part of at least one motorcycle collection, and has spent its most recent years on museum display in the care of its consigning owner.
The bike is offered for sale with a rare, German-made sidecar by Royal Seitenwagen, finished in matching gloss black with cherry red leather seat cushioning and a black tonneau cover. As a result of this motorcycle’s period of static display, it is recommended that buyers carry out a mechanical inspection prior to returning this R63 to the road. A magnificent example of motorcycle manufacturing from the inter-war years, this BMW will surely be enjoyed by its next owner, whether returning to regular use or as part of another collection. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu22.
