Following seven years of production, the legendary Jaguar E-Type was to undergo its first radical revision for 1968. Necessitated by upcoming emissions and traffic safety requirements in the United States, Jaguar introduced the Series 2 E-Type, which retained the same basic shape as the first generation but with major alterations. Foremost was the removal of the E-Type’s glass-covered headlights in favor of an open design, while under the bonnet, the 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine traded a triple SU carburetor setup for a more emissions-friendly designs with twin Zenith-Strombergs. Other changes included twin cooling fans, wingless knock-off wheel nuts, a proper glovebox door, a lockable, collapsing steering column, and plastic rocker switches in place of the original metal toggles.

As the factory was retooled, Jaguar continued to build Series 1 E-Types fitted with progressively more Series 2 features. These unique cars, wearing a blend of Series 1 and 2 equipment, have come to be unofficially known as the “Series 1.5” and are among the rarest of all production E-Types.

The Roadster offered here is an original left-hand-drive example, and retains its numbers-matching chassis, engine block, and bodywork, as described on its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. Further, it is still finished in the factory-correct colors, Carmen Red over Black interior with Black top. Built on 5 December and dispatched to Jaguar Cars of New York on 13 December 1967, it was originally delivered to one Dr. Edward Gordon. Beautifully restored some years ago and nicely upkept, it has since been well-prepared and equipped with a Series 1-style triple-carburetor setup. It is offered with service invoices from its previous ownership back to 2015, as well as a correct jack in a reproduction bag, and has recorded 6,705 miles, likely since restoration, at the time of cataloguing.

Every collection requires an E-Type, one of the most beautiful automobiles ever produced in any era; this one is ripe for the choosing. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mi24/.
