Production of the Mercedes-Benz 230SL began in June 1963 and ended on January 5, 1967. The chassis was based on the W111 sedan platform, with a reduced wheelbase, double wishbone front suspension and an independent single-joint, low-pivot swing rear axle. The dual-circuit braking system had front disc brakes and power-assisted drum brakes at the rear. The Mercedes-Benz 230SL was offered with a four-speed manual transmission or an optional, fluid-coupled four-speed automatic transmission, which was popular especially in the U.S
