Description
Modern from every angle, Studebaker’s President was the company’s finest and most exclusive offering, accounting for less than 10% of total production in 1935. Company literature dubbed the newest Studebaker’s design the “skyway silhouette, with slim, silvery radiators, and gull’s wing fenders.” The President Series featured a wheelbase 4" longer than the lower models and utilized a higher compression cylinder head, which raised horsepower for the flagship model to 110. Innovations include Studebaker’s own independent front suspension, coupled with automatic Ride Control shock absorbers, which dramatically improved handling.
The President Roadster offered here is an outstanding example, finished in a version of Palma Green paint, one of Studebaker’s standard colors for the model year, and is smartly accented by a green leather interior. The instrument panel is especially modern, and beautifully styled with an Art Deco-style font and layout. The rear-mounted spare allows the sides of the Roadster to be unencumbered, adding visual length to the design.
Mark Smith was widely respected for his unerring eye for design, and ability to procure some of the finest and most unusual prewar American automobiles, and this Studebaker is one such example. Nicely presented throughout, this handsome President is proof that the Big Three had serious competition in the 1930s, in terms of design, and would make a fabulous addition to any group of Classic Era automobiles.
