Description
This Ferrari F40 was delivered new via Maranello Concessionaires LTD in December 1989 to Mr Thomas Sopwith, a name synonymous within the sports car racing realm. The F40 wears its original specification of Rosso Ferrari 300/9 exterior over a standard interior, with correct red Nomex upholstered seats.
Thomas, more commonly known as ‘Tommy’, was the son of Sir Thomas Sopwith CBE of the Sopwith Aviation Company, renowned for their role in supplying aircraft to the Royal Air Force during the First World War. After completing national service in 1953, Tommy began his career in motor racing. Coming from an engineering background, Tommy was involved in the development of Armstrong Siddeley’s Sphinx racing car – the rival to Jaguar’s C-Type. Further, Tommy founded Equipe Endeavour, a team that made history by taking victory in the first-ever SCC race in 1958. Sopwith and Gawaine Baillie (the team’s co-founder) went on to win every single race in their class throughout the year.
Chassis no. 83235 is 1 of just 78 U.K. supplied Ferrari F40s and is likely one of the finest in the world. Showing just 8,120 kms from new, this F40’s desirability is furthered by being a non-cat/non-adjust example that presents remarkably in all regards. The car retains fully matching numbers, original leather book pack, stamped warranty card and owner’s service book, manuals and both keys. Further, the F40 is accompanied by a history file containing maintenance invoices, letters of correspondence between Mr Sopwith and Maranello Concessionaires, (including Col, R.J. Hoare, CBE) and original factory invoice totalling £130,750.
