Description

Transmission: 5 gears, Manual gearbox
Registration number: L-039-HK

It is in the late 1970s when BMW starts a collaboration with Lamborghini to produce a homologation model so that it can race in the Group 5 class and compete against rivals such as Porsche. At that time, however, it was not feasible for BMW to build four hundred cars, so contact was made with the Italian sports car manufacturer.
Even before the project properly starts, Lamborghini is in financial trouble and it seems that the sports car designed by Giorgietto Giugiaro will not materialize. A handful of ex-employees of 'the brand with the bull' started the company ItalEngineering, mainly as a mediator so that the cooperation between BMW, ItalDesign and Baur in Stuttgart runs smoothly. Baur is the party that takes care of a large part of the production. Baur receives the partly already built M1 from Italy to partly dismantle it and completely finish it.
Under the tailgate a 3,453 cc measuring DOHC straight-six engine with Bosch Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. 277 hp strong and coupled to a five-speed manual ZF gearbox.
After the men in Stuttgart have finished, the cars move once more to BMW in Munich to be handed over to the first owners in a specially equipped room. 399 road-going M1s will be built.

The M1 you see here is the third example built according to factory production data and the first production car to be delivered to a dealer in Germany. Initially this Inka Orange is used as a training car at BMW service centres and then it is sold to BMW adept and racing driver Alf Gebhardt. Gebhardt had been successfully driving a CSL and M1 Procar since 1978 and had close ties to BMW, which led him to acquire this street version of the M1. Gebhardt owned the car for about 6 years, driving about 1,000 kilometres a year.
The second owner was at least as much of a lover of special BMWs as Gebhardt, because this man owned the M1 for thirty years!
After thirty years, so quite recently, the owner gave up and the car was completely checked and tested. Since the car has been maintained by an M1 specialist all this time and the car has only been driven for 15,000 kilometres, the result could be guessed: compression and leak tests yielding perfect and equivalent results for all cylinders. The third owner, a Dutchman, is also the last owner before we happily and reluctantly hope to sell it at the same time to an equally great enthusiast of these unique cars.

The M1 we offer has only 22,000 kilometres of experience and is in magnificent original condition. Beautiful paintwork, no damage and a beautiful interior: we can go into detail everywhere, but in fact, the description can be done with: an M1 in practically new condition. Add to that the fact that it is a car from a legendary manufacturer that was built in extremely low numbers and you understand: the M1 is an icon that will only become more popular. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and with a top speed of over 260 km/h, the M1 was one of the fastest production sports cars of its time. This Inka Orange M1 is one of the first cars built and has a solid history. Items such as the first aid kit and the tool roll are also still present.

The combination of the very early production, the most popular colour, perfect original condition and low mileage with a beautiful history makes this perhaps the most desirable M1 in ages.
