Given the rapidly advancing technology of the new millennium, it was clear Ferrari was intent on dominating the next century. The original design was truly remarkable as it offered one of the most advanced production methods of construction combined with a newly derived V8 engine. The aluminum space frame chassis was state of the art being 40% stiffer than the F355 and yet 28% lighter. The new engine developed just under 400hp, while taking advantage of developments in advanced aerodynamics. No detail was ignored including the decision to locate the engine in a layout that no longer necessitated costly “engine out” timing belt services. The new Pininfarina design was unlike anything before, curvaceous, yet aggressive and the first to feature the now iconic clear engine cover. Fresh and innovative, the 360 delivered a distinct Ferrari look that set the standard for future generations to come. The design remained in production until 2004, the last year for the 360 series. Although Ferrari built a total of 4,199 US market Modenas, fewer than half of the production, 1,810, were coupes, 469 of which were outfitted with the highly desirable 6-speed manual transmission. History of this ExampleAccording to a copy of the window sticker accompanying this car, this 360 Modena was delivered new to Lake Forest Sportscars Ltd., Lake Bluff, IL. The car was optioned with the following items:- Red Brake Calipers- 6 CD Changer- Daytona Style Seats- Black Rear Challenge Grille- Piping in Colour Upon RequestAs with all 360 Modenas the car featured Xenon headlamps, limited slip differential, automatic climate controls, and airbags. The 6-speed manual transmission was offered with oil pump and oil cooler as part of the integrated manual gearbox. As noted in the owner’s manual service book accompanying the car, the first owner of record took possession of this 360 in October 30, 2000, with the first service recorded on July 28, 2006, at 5,469 miles, performed by Continental Auto Sports. This 3-year interval service included timing belt service, fluids and filter replacements, and misc. minor services. The service invoices included with the car consecutively proceed with regular serviced and accumulated miles under the care of Continental Auto Sports. Accumulated mileage is further confirmed by a current Carfax. In addition to interval services, new tires, and brake services, a belt service was performed in 2015 with 12,348 miles also by Continental Auto Sports, and again in March 2020, with 15,427 miles indicated on the accompanying invoice. In July 2020 with 15,639 miles, a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport tires and a new battery were installed. Later that same year, O2 sensors were replaced, sticky buttons were removed, refinished, and reinstalled, and the sun visors were removed and repaired to improve loose hinge action. In October 2021 with 17,785 miles, the front ball joint boots were replaced, the driver’s door cable replaced, alarm siren replaced, the factory radio rewired, and fluids checked. Under current ownership, the most recent oil and filter change was performed February 2022 with 17,933 miles. During this service, both radiators were removed for professional flush, new coolant hoses installed, a new transmission heat exchanger installed, a new water pump was installed, a new gearbox mount, an oil and filter service performed, and fresh fluids as well as new air and cabin filters installed. The current owner purchased the car from Continental Auto Sports in April 2022 and has accumulated fewer than 1,ooo miles under their ownership. Cosmetic OverviewToday this 360 Modena presents in excellent condition overall. The car is up to date on major service and has been properly prepared for the next fortunate owner. The finish is quite nice throughout, showing excellent gloss on all exterior body panels. The car has been metered with a digital paint meter indicating lower single digits on all but one of the metal body’s surfaces indicative of factory paint. A 12.4 reading is noted on the passenger door panel. The sloping windshield, see-through engine cover, race inspired features, and stunning profile create a dramatic and memorable appearance. The glass, lighting, and lenses are in excellent condition as are the emblems and Ferrari script. The body panels display very good fit throughout with excellent panel gaps and tight closures including the front and rear bumper caps. The inner surfaces and door jambs appear clean and well-maintained. The silver finished wheels are in excellent condition with good tread remaining on all four Michelin tires purchased in 2020. The extra-cost bright red brake calipers mounted to the large, ventilated discs make an excellent color accent to the silver body. The interior of the car is especially nice. The black leather covering the Daytona seats is supple and smooth with excellent surfacing, fine silver color accent stitching, and no marks of note. The driver’s seat has no significant marks and excellent bolsters. The dashboard, instruments, and switches are all in near new condition, having benefited from the professional refurbishment of this era of Ferrari buttons and switches known to develop chemical stickiness due to a manufacturing flaw. The steering wheel, dash pad, and instrument cluster are free of notable wear and remain in excellent condition. All other leather surfaces as well as the center console, door panels, visors, and A-pillars are in excellent condition. The center console features the gated alloy gear shifter, poised to shift the 6-speed manual gearbox, just as nearly every historically important competition Ferrari has been outfitted since inception. Carpeting is in generally good condition with minor evidence of use in the drivers footbox area. A .5” hole is noted in the carpet area of the driver’s footwell where a rubber plug appears to be missing. The inner liner for the front trunk compartment is in good condition as well though a small tear is evident at the bottom of the carpeted section. The front storage area maintains factory correct finishes and features consistent with the exterior visual presentation. Under the hood, the innovative mid-engine V8 has been properly maintained with excellent factory castings, air intake housings, and original accessory equipment as delivered. Ferrari number plates, factory installation stickers, and verification markings are in place and in excellent condition. The original engine and engine compartment are clean and correct featuring textured red cast-alloy engine intake plenums and properly finished structural components. The underside of the car shows signs of use including a few scrapes and scuff marks typically found on the aerodynamic panels that divert airflow to various areas of the car. There is no evidence of structural compromise to the chassis or any of the suspension components. The car starts, drives, and shifts smoothly in any gear. The manual gearbox is perfectly positioned and there is ample comfort in the cockpit even for larger frame drivers. Power delivery is sharp and exhilarating from the near 400 hp engine. Road manners are comfortable under general conditions, but when prompted, deliver rewarding launches up to highway speeds with confidence. Cornering and braking are as one might expect from a car developed by leaders in Formula 1 technology. This Ferrari 360 Modena is a wonderful example of one of the most important and ground-breaking modern Ferraris ever produced. Known history since new, consistent service/maintenance records, and $13k in recent mechanical services further validate the excellence of this sharp and capable Modena. The beautiful leather interior, 6-speed manual gearbox, and mid-engine design make this Ferrari a compelling and dynamic combination of power and excitement ready to please the next fortunate enthusiast.
