The Porsche 930 as the early 911 turbo was knowns as, has grown to legendary status with its magical combination of brilliant lines, an aggressive appearance, being turbo charged and a reputation to be dangerous to inexperienced drivers. Whilst almost every combustion engine has a turbo these days, it was the Porsche 911’s power-booster that brought fame to that piece of engineering.
And that was fully deserved. In 1975 Porsche presented the 911 Turbo, a car fitted with a 3.0 litre six-cylinder boxer with a large KKK-turbocharger. With a 6.5:1 compression the engine produces 260 hp besides a heap of torque. The 911’s power-plant is so aggressive it soon gained the reputation and nickname of “Widow maker”. The big turbo does little at low revs and joins in the fun with one big mid-range shove. Exactly the range where many an owner is accelerating on a motorway slip road or out of a long bend. Many a 930 Turbo found it end in this fashion.

This fine example hails from 1977, the last year in America the great Turbo and Carrera names were both featured on the bonnet before only the Turbo name remained. A primal Turbo in other words.
This Indischrot (Guards Red) 930 is well-known to us as we sold the car back in 2008 to an enthusiast collector. Now 13 years later that same owner has returned the car to our collection. That owner was someone who did not drive his cars much. This 930 has a near vestal 39,000 miles or just over 60,000 km on the clock. This is a very authentic and unadulterated car. A Porsche official certificate confirms this car has Matching Numbers engine and transmission.

Outside the 930 is exceedingly neat. As straight as an arrow with perfect paintwork and no damages as is wholly befitting its mere 39,257 miles. Black details such as the rubbers, door-grips and the finish of the early still flat rear-spoiler are in good order. The only modifications are the change to European headlights and slimmer bumper guards, which everyone will agree only enhances the car’s looks. The dark interior trim is also in excellent condition and is in keeping with the car’s overall state of maintenance. The seats have clearly not suffered much, the same being true for the steering wheel, gear knob and the rest of the switching gear. The VDO gauges showing distance and speed in miles are also pristine.

Then we come to the original Matching Numbers 3.0 turbo, an engine which started life in the RSR and provided with an enormous KKK-turbo by Porsche. The Porsche 930 Turbo was just about the fastest production car available to buy at the time with a zero to 100 km/hr sprint in barely 5 seconds. Just remember: we are describing performance of 47 years ago! Roadholding is fantastic, with the Turbo adding a lot of modifications compared to a Carrera. The suspension was revisited and larger brakes were fitted. The transmission was a lot stronger than in a Carrara to enable it to cope with the enormous amount of powerful torque.

Mechanically this Porsche is very sound, making it a feast to clock up many miles this coming spring. The wide tyres seated in widened arches have recently been replaced, so you will not experience a lack of grip.

A brilliant 930 Turbo finished with all the correct spec. The fact this Porsche is also a Matching Numbers affair completes the picture in full.
