The McLaren P1 is a ground-breaking model that was born out of the British company’s desire to take on the Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari with a hybrid hypercar for the road.
As with the classic F1 that preceded it in the 1990s, McLaren used expertise accumulated over years of competing at motorsport’s elite level to produce a machine that showcased the pinnacle of automotive performance, design and technology. Now, nearly a decade after the P1’s introduction, its status as one of the most iconic road cars of its generation is assured.
Key to McLaren’s strategy with the P1 was a desire to keep weight to an absolute minimum, which resulted in the use of a carbon monocoque chassis that tipped the scales at only 90 kilograms, as well as carbon fibre body panels. There was also a focus on providing exceptional aerodynamic efficiency, via adjustable front and rear wings that offer as much as 600 kilograms of downforce at speeds well below the P1’s peak.
But it was the hybrid powertrain that really defined the car and lies at the heart of its magnificent performance potential. Powering the P1 is a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V-8, mated to an electronic motor that maintains power output when the turbochargers are off-boost or spooling.
This set-up delivers a truly impressive total output of 903 brake horsepower, with 727 brake horsepower from the V-8 and a further 176 brake horsepower coming from the electric motor. The result is predictably devastating acceleration, with 0 to 100 km/h despatched in just 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h arriving in 6.8 seconds, and 300 km/h reached in 16.5 seconds—a full five seconds quicker than the earlier McLaren F1. A remarkable top speed of 350 km/h is achievable.
This particular P1 was first registered in 2015 in Switzerland, and has been preserved in virtually as-new condition having covered just 950 kilometres from new at the time of cataloguing.
A vivid Volcano Yellow finish ensures it commands the attention its blistering performance deserves, and is complemented by a matching rear wing, gloss carbon fibre bumpers at the front and rear, plus lightweight Stealth alloy wheels in grey, with silver callipers. Inside, the colour scheme continues with a Carbon Black Alcantara steering wheel and detailing, while racing seats are also finished in Carbon Black Alcantara and leather, with contrasting Cadmium Yellow stitching.
Presented with its McLaren manuals, and with only three registered owners from new, this P1 offers a tremendous opportunity to acquire an immaculately maintained example of one of the most collectable cars of the modern era.
