Description
- One of just 153 Dino 206 GTs constructed, and of only five imported to the UK
- First owned by Le Mans driver and team owner Alain de Cadenet
- The genesis of Ferrari’s roadgoing mid-engine sports cars
Launched in 1967, the Dino 206 GT marked a departure from the front-engined V-12 grand tourers that had served Ferrari so well. Powered by a transversely arranged 2.0-litre V-6, the petite sports car was the first mid-engined roadgoing machine produced by Maranello. In addition to the all-alloy powerplant, fully independent suspension, and ventilated discs all-round, the Ferrari was clothed in lightweight aluminium bodywork crafted in the workshops of Carrozzeria Scaglietti. Just 153 examples would be built before the arrival of the more powerful, though heavier, steel bodied 2.4-litre Dino 246 GT.
Chassis 00356 was completed on 31 January 1969, finished in the timeless combination of Rosso Chiaro over Nero with matching carpet. It was delivered to the UK a month later, imported by Maranello Concessionaires. By March, the Ferrari had been bought by its first owner, playboy and gentleman driver, Alain de Cadenet; marque expert Marcel Massini notes that it changed hands later that year. By 1972 the car was based in Glasgow, and in 1979 was bought by the consignor’s Dublin-based father. Since then, it has remained in dry storage. The recipient of restoration work at the hands of its long-term owner, the car presents today as a near-complete yet unfinished project fitted with a non-matching Fiat variant of the lauded Dino V-6. For more detailed information about the work required to return this car to the road, please speak with an RM Sotheby’s Specialist.
As one of the most special variants of Dino, offered in a desirable colour combination and from long-term family ownership, chassis 00356 is a highly tempting restoration project.
Please note that this car was involved in an accident. The repair work involved replacing the front nose with steel rather than the traditional alloy. Buyers are encouraged to inspect the car in person prior to bidding, and contact an RM Sotheby's Car Specialist with any further questions.
