"William Morris with his mighty Nuffield organisation had rescued the ancient and venerable Riley Company from the hands of the receiver in 1938. Coventry-based Riley had been particularly hit by the 1939-45 war in Europe, at the end of which they had neither the jigs nor tools, so a new range of cars was hastily designed. The 1½ litre RMA was introduced at the end of 1945, soon to be joined by the 2½ RMB, both engines being four-cylinder with high camshaft units. Bodies were built in the traditional way at Morris Bodies in Coventry, the elegant saloon having a distinctly vintage look to it, while the RM was also produced in stylish drophead coupé and roadster form. The 2½ litre engine was rated at 100hp and was an exceptionally fine, high-speed, long-distance motor car built in the best traditions.
This lovely Riley RMB was supplied new to West Sussex Constabulary in 1948. It has been thoroughly loved and maintained throughout its life and we have no doubt that it saw plenty of action when being used by the Police; one of the items in the extensive history file are its patrol logs. More recently the car attended the Goodwood Revival and was used as a course car. This Riley still has its radio telephone, front bell, siren and Police badges, and comes with Police helmet, hats, a whistle, and handcuffs. Finished in glossy black and green with rich tobacco leather interior in original condition. It is supplied with a V5 registration document and a very large history file containing Police records, invoices and a couple of period photographs depicting the car when it was in the force. It is a lovely example with a good history, very presentable and eminently reliable after having the engine rebuilt a few years ago.
