According to a copy of its original title, the first owner of this Renault 5 Turbo 2 registered it in April 1986. Baudouin Lempereur is understood to have bought it directly from him at the end of the 1990s and then kitted it out for his own use in regularity rallies. In particular, he fitted a Brantz tripmeter and a set of the renowned Cibié ‘Oscar’ long-range driving lamps. As with most of his cars, Lempereur also modified the driving position to suit his considerable height, especially the steering column, for which he machined an adapter himself, and the gear lever. At the wheel of this car, one of his favourites, he took part in several rallies, including the famous Rallye des Légendes, in 2011 and 2012. Finished in an attractive pearlescent white, this Turbo 2 is in well preserved original condition. The interior fittings are in very decent condition, with beige cloth seats which offer excellent support.
As the headlining tends to come unstuck, Lempereur fixed it in place with a metal rod.
It should be recalled that the Turbo 2 was an evolution of the Renault 5 Turbo, which, with its centrally-mounted turbocharged engine producing 160bhp, was a real missile on the road. Unveiled in 1982, the Turbo 2 carried over the same engine, but to allow a more affordable price, it adopted the interior from the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo and had a roof and doors made from steel rather than aluminium. To drive, it lost none of its predecessor’s performance.
The model we are offering for sale, carefully maintained by a mechanical enthusiast, is a perfect example of this fast and distinctive car, of which just 3167 were built.
