History

Introduced in 1962, the Lotus 22 was built to dominate the Formula Junior circuit. An evolution of the Lotus 20, it featured key upgrades that made it faster and more agile, including a wider rear track and an improved suspension system borrowed from the Lotus 21 Formula 1 car. These refinements gave it superior handling and stability, making it the weapon of choice for young drivers aiming for greatness.

At its heart is a 1.098cc Ford Cosworth straight-4 engine, producing 105 hp, paired with a Hewland 5-speed gearbox. Weighing just over 400 kg, the Lotus 22 exemplified Colin Chapman’s design philosophy: "Simplify, then add lightness." With its silver body, black interior, and precision-engineered chassis, it is not just a race car, it is a finely tuned driving machine crafted for the thrill of the track.

As Formula Junior racing reached its peak in the early 1960s, the Lotus 22 quickly became the dominant force on the grid. Competing against rivals like Cooper and Lola, it set new standards in cornering speed, braking efficiency, and sheer driving pleasure. Chassis 61/221, built in August 1962, was among these elite machines, carving through circuits with effortless precision.

Decades later, in March 2014, this very Lotus 22 roared back to life at Mettet Circuit in Belgium. Though years had passed, its high-revving Cosworth engine and nimble chassis still delivered a thrilling performance, reminding everyone why it was once the king of Formula Junior racing. Even today, the Lotus 22 continues to grace historic racing events, proving that true legends never fade, they just keep racing.
