Does this not look good? This matching numbers Aston Martin DB6 is more so remarkable by virtue of its brilliant colour selection and wonderful condition. This fully restored example was originally supplied to the States on the 17th February 1967. The first owner was quite astute in his choice, going for the 3.73:1 limited slip diff, normalair air-conditioning, chrome wire wheels and safety belts.
As the Aston Martin DB5’s s successor the DB6 was given a longer wheelbase. The main reason for this was to enlarge the cabin space. The higher roof line, modified rear windows and the rear “Kamm-tail” with integrated spoiler distinguished the DB6 from its predecessor. Surprisingly the modifications to front and rear only added 5 cm in length compared to the DB5.
The bodywork of this example was not a complete Carrozzeria Touring affair with Aston Martin taking care in the main. Aluminium was still used to keep the weight down. The bodywork is in excellent
condition with nice and thin, correctly aligned panelwork. The excellent current state of the paintwork is down to the high quality of the re-spray. The chrome wire wheels and brightwork look and are in very good shape. Inside there is a sea of red carpet and red leather. The Smith gauges are in all in great condition as well as in perfect working order. The 3-spoke wooden steering wheel is also a very welcome sight. The lovely supple leather has started to develop a patina, only adding to the allure of this British Grand Tourer.
As a Grand Tourer this Aston Martin fits the bill exceedingly well. The longer wheelbase has improved its the roadholding compared to the DB5. The Kamm-tail and other bodywork modifications have significantly reduced lift at higher speeds. The cherry on the cake is the delightfully exact ZF gearbox keeping the 282 Ps 4.0 litre straight-six at the right RPM. In other words this translates to an absolute joyful driving experience. When at the time the DB6 stood new in the showroom it was hailed as the perfect car with enough room for four and their luggage. Don’t get us wrong it was still a seriously fast car, an absolute benchmark car. As far as that is concerned, after 50 years not much has changed; the Aston Martin DB6 still gives the kind of performance modern cars simply cannot match.
This Aston Martin DB6 is not just a great looker but is also great to drive. The car comes with a document file containing amongst others things a copy of the original sales receipt, a printout of the DB6 register and a series of photos. Compared to a DB5 this most probably represents the buy of the moment when it comes to Aston Martin.
