Brands like Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike, Google are brands recognizable the world over. So is Ferrari and interestingly the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer was named ‘The World’s Strongest Brand’ in the 2019 Brand Finance Global 500 Report.
Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 out of Alfa Romeo’s race division as Auto Avio Costruzioni the company built its first car in 1940.
The Cavallino Rampante or ‘prancing horse’ was the symbol chosen by Ferrari and it is recognized by just about every man, woman and child on the planet!
Having reasserted itself at the top of the supercar hierarchy with the first ‘Boxer’-the 365GT/4 BB-Ferrari went one better with its successor, the 512BB introduced in October 1976 at the Paris Auto Show.
For the new car, Ferrari abandoned its long-standing practice of denoting a model by the capacity of an individual cylinder and adopted the Dino-type nomenclature where ‘512’ indicates 5 litres/12 cylinders.
The increase in engine size from the original Boxer’s 4.4-litres was made, not so much with increased power in mind, but to enable the 512BB to meet increasingly stringent emissions targets without a loss of performance. Displacement was increased by enlarging both bore and stroke, whilst in addition, the compression ratio was raised and lubrication changed from wet to dry sump.
It wasn’t just the engine design that was different either. For the first time Ferrari put the engine behind the driver. Ferrari’s V12 Berlinetta cars always had the engine in the front, but with cars like the Lamborghini Miura and Contact capturing buyers attention, it was clear that Ferrari’s top model had to go the mid-engined route.
Over a five year production run just 929 512 BB models were manufactured between 1976 and 1981.
BB’s were produced until the model was upgraded to include Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and became known as the 512i BB.
Nowadays the carburetor versions are the more desirable version
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
The car was completed at the Maranello Ferrari works and supplied new to its first owner on 7th of July 1980.
Today, this Ferrari 512 BB shows just 15.350 kilometers on the clock. The Ferrari is one of the nicest we have seen over the years.
The car was owned by a gentlemen who we met some years ago. We bought at the time the an extremely nice restored Jaguar XK 140. In the workshop was this Ferrari 512 BB. The car was under restoration and the restoration was done on the same level as the Jaguar.
The gentlemen has a very precise profession which is clearly visible in the work he does on cars. Every single detail on the cars he restores is perfect.
We have stayed always in contact and after many years we were happy and proud to be the new owner of the Ferrari.
The car is as described beautifully restored. The blue finish was found as base color and a sample was made to bring the car back in this most probably original color.
Since the restoration the Ferrari has been very well stored and once in a while driven on nice weather days.
The Ferrari is currently registered in the Netherlands and we can assist with the registration procedure in other countries.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
This Ferrari is in the condition we personally like to have our private cars. Extremely beautiful but not restored to a nicer then new condition.
The car can be best described as very correct and honest. It’s a car which clearly shows it’s correctness.
The paint on the car is beautiful. The paint has a very nice deep shine.
A very small paint imperfection can be found on the left and right fender but this is minor and can be easily repaired when requested.
The clamshell hood and rear engine lid open and shut smoothly, displaying very nice fit with even panel gaps and excellent closure.
The doors open and shut without issue, with superb fit and preserved inner paint surfaces.
The black trim remains in excellent condition with no major flaws or notable fading due to excessive heat exposure.
The wheels are in excellent condition without any signs of use.
The factory correct chrome plated knock offs add a nice accent to the cast wheels shod with Michelin TRX tires
When we bought the car the former owner told us about the refitting of the windows which took an extremely long time but as this car is done with a very high attention for detail, it is done much better and nicer then new.
The unique lenses and lighting appear in excellent condition, further supporting the superb preservation and low mile accumulation this car has enjoyed since new.
The front trunk compartment is also in excellent condition with original black carpeting and factory correct materials in place. The original spare tire is in place.
By looking at the car it can be clearly concluded that the car is in a beautiful condition. Beautiful doorfittings, nice chrome and no pitting or broken glasses.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior has been restored with the correct materials and on the period correct way.
All of the seats, door cards and rear section present very well.
To sit in this Ferrari and look around is absolutely fantastic because there are so many small details which ask for attention but off-course driving is even more special.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The V12 fires into life with the very first turn of the key and produces a very pleasing exhaust note.
We were happy to drive the car back from the former owner to our showroom. A 200 kilometers trip which can be easily described as FANTASTIC.
What a car is the 512 BB to drive. The sound, the seat position, the power is just fabulous.
The car is handling as it should. Not too light but a bit heavy. You are constantly aware that you drive a serious car with a very serious engine.
The handling of the car is fabulous. Steering and braking is extremely accurate as you might expect of a Ferrari.
Yes it’s a big party to see and drive this Ferrari.
This wonderful 512 BB is sure to provide its new owner with sound investment return and, above all, great enjoyment, whether on display in one’s collection or behind the wheel and rocketing down the open road.
