For the 1958 model year, Chrysler’s low-production 300D saw several refinements to the 300C’s design including reshaping of the windshield header and increased glass area. Additionally, the car’s list of standard colors was almost completely new. The coupe’s lofty $5,603 list price ensured prestige and exclusivity, and delivered its fortunate owners a sport-oriented luxury automobile. Road & Track measured the 300D, with its 380 hp Hemi V-8, at 0–60 in 8.4 seconds. Its torsion-bar suspension and light-touch power steering gave it sprightly handling dynamics.

In 2005, this very special 300D was purchased in unrestored condition from noted 300 collector and celebrated upholsterer Gary Goers. Well-known Bay Area Mopar enthusiasts Richard Palmer and Henry Hopkins deemed the 300D worthy of a concours restoration due to its extremely rare 999 special-order paint code and factory air-conditioning. A 2009 Hemmings Classic Car magazine article details the painstaking process that 300 expert Bob Hayen completed to bring the 300D’s mechanical systems and myriad cosmetic details to prize-worthy condition. The striking Chrysler was finished in the 1958 Chrysler color of Air Force Blue, and Gary Goers expertly trimmed the interior in tan leather. Upon its completion in 2007, 30 months of collective efforts were richly rewarded with the People’s Choice, Sponsor’s Choice, and Best of Show awards at the Big Sky Mopar Club Show in Montana. The Chrysler’s quality of presentation was further affirmed at the National 300 Club Meet in Reno, Nevada in 2008 with another Best of Show honor.

Acquired by the consignor in 2010, the 300D has seen regular attention and exercise, and the restoration still presents particularly well. Of significant note, the engine bay still displays its myriad gleaming finishes, to say nothing of the car’s unique and sublime color combination. A benchmark of unbridled late-1950s American design, this pampered 300D beckons to be enjoyed on the road as well as the show field.
